Melford "Mike" D. Callahan

Melford D. “Mike” Callahan, age 83 of Grafton, ND passed away on Wednesday, January 8, 2020 at the Unity Medical Center of Grafton.

Mike Callahan was born October 18, 1936 in Forest River, ND the son of the late William and Bessie (Bruce) Callahan. He graduated from High School in Fairdale, ND and attended Mayville State University for two years. Mike served in the United States Air Force from 1955-1959 serving in England. Upon his discharge he moved to Grafton, ND and worked in the Recreation Department at the Life Skills and Transition Center from 1961-1999. Mike married Sue Gaustad on June 2, 1978 in Grafton where the couple made their home.

Mike was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church where he served as greeter. He was involved with the Community Christmas Eve Party at the church for a number of years. He was a member of the Grafton Eagle’s Club where he served as president from 1982-83. He was a member of the Grafton Boosters Club, coached elementary girls and boys basketball, umpired and coached softball, baseball and refereed basketball. He was one of Grafton’s most dedicated Spoiler Fans. He enjoyed listening to Brent Herman’s play the piano and never missed a Piano Talk.

Mike is survived by his wife, Sue of Grafton, ND; sisters and brothers-in-law and many nieces and nephews. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters: Margaret (Al) Bolster and Marie (Joe) Cowley and brothers: Murphy (Harriet), Morris and Marvin Callahan.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, January 13, 2020 at 10:30 AM at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church of Grafton, ND. Visitation will be Sunday from 5-7 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at the St. John’s Catholic Church. Friends may also call at the church on Monday for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in the spring. Military rites will be provided by the United States Air Force Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers the family would prefer memorials to the Unity Medical Center or St. John’s Catholic Church
