William "Bud" Engelmann, age 82 of Grafton, formerly of Hoople, died Monday, October 19, 2009 at the Lutheran Sunset Home in Grafton, after a courageous battle with cancer. Bud Engelmann was born May 22, 1927 on a farm in Elora Township, Cavalier County, the son of William and Mary (Markel) Engelmann. He began farming there with his two uncles as a young man. He served with the United States Armed Services during World War II. Bud was united in marriage to Elvira Burry on February 23, 1952 in Homestead, Florida. She passed away in 1994. "Bud" was active in the community. He served two terms as Mayor of Hoople in the 1960's. In 1960, he lead in the formation of a Potato Wash Plant, Hoople Potato Products, Inc., and was a member of the original Board of Directors. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Hoople, Northern Plains Potato Growers Association, Hoople Farmers Elevator Board, and the Crystal American Legion. "Bud's" greatest hobby was fishing. He is survived by his two children: Richard (Beth) Engelmann, Hoople, ND; Mary Kay (Bob) Hogan, Muskegon, MI; grandchildren: Thomas Engelmann, Hoople, ND; Faith Hogan, Muskegon, MI; step-grandchildren: Jayce (Richie) Schumacher, Grafton, ND; Keeley (Paul) Ray, Maple Grove, MN; step great-grandchildren: Greer, John and Elle Schumacher, Grafton, ND; siblings: Marge Bray, Mesa, AZ; Marion (Lyle) Wicken, Grand Forks, ND; Kenneth Engelmann, Everett, WA; sister-in-law Judy Engelmann, Grand Forks, ND; and dear friend and companion Merle Fedje, Grafton, ND. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, sister Leona and brother Vernon. Funeral services will be Thursday, October 22, 2009 at 10:30 AM at the First Lutheran Church, Hoople, ND. Visitation will be Wednesday, October 21, 2009 from 5-7 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Grafton. Friends may call at the church for one hour prior to the service on Thursday. Interment will be at the Hoople City Cemetery, Hoople, ND. Military services will be provided by the Clifford Lane American Legion Post #107 and the John Anderson American Legion Post #240.
