Vincent H. Kjelaas, age 84 of Adams, ND died Wednesday, September 17, 2008 at his home in Adams. Vincent H. Kjelaas was born February 21, 1924 near Fairdale, ND the son of the late Tom and Esther (Lund) Kjelaas. He attended the Benas Memorial School and later attended the Wahpeton State School of Science. Vincent served in the United States Navy from May of 1944-April of 1946, serving in the Pacific Theater. Following his discharge he returned to Adams and ran the Kjelaas Cafe. He was united in marriage to Ione Rundhaug on June 19, 1947 in Adams, ND. The couple operated the Kjelaas Cafe for a year, and then moved to California. They returned home and he went to work for the Gustafson International Harvester. In May of 1951 he went to work for the North Dakota State Highway Department where he worked for 37 years, retiring in 1987.
After retiring, Vincent enjoyed restoring and refinishing antique furniture.
He was a member of the Adams Mountain Lutheran Church, the Qually-Dvorak American Legion Post #237, and the Vaarliv Sons of Norway Lodge. He served on the Adams School Board, the Adams City Council and served on the Adams Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed bowling, hunting, and fishing and loved to travel.
He is survived by his wife Ione of Adams, ND; children Vickie (Bud) Mahnke and Bruce (Renee) Kjelaas both of Grand Forks, ND; four grandchildren: Karen (Jason) Bindas, Nancy (Christopher) Sorenson, Michael Mahnke, Kristina (Ryan) Norberg, five step-grandchildren: Carrie (Russel) Sonnentag, Paul (Katie) Mahnke, Erica (Mick) Brown, Ben (Jamie) Maygra, Megan maygra; seven great grandchildren: Jeffrey Ollerich, Jessie Bindas, Logan Bindas, Kevin Sorenson, Kadyn Norberg, Karlie Norberg, Jossilyn Norberg;
seven step-great grandchildren: Abigail Sonnentag, Grace Sonnentag, Christina Mahnke, Kayla Brown, Max Brown, Hannah Maygra and Brady Maygra and brother Earl (Amelia) Kjelaas, St. Michael, ND. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Hazel Nygard.
Funeral services will be Monday, September 22, 2008 at 2:00 PM at the Adams Mountain Lutheran Church. Visitation will be Sunday from 5-7 with prayer service at 7:00 PM at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Park River. Friends may also call at the church on Monday for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the West Adam's Lutheran Cemetery. Military rites will be provided by the Qually-Dvorak American Legion Post.
