Vernon L. Herbel

Vernon L. Herbel, age 76 of Grafton passed away Saturday, December 29, 2012 at the Unity Medical Center of Grafton. Vernon L. Herbel was born June 22, 1936 in Alsen, Cavalier County, ND, the son of the late Reinhart and Mary (Klein) Herbel. He attended school in Alsen, ND and graduated high school in Wheelock, ND. He then attended Minot State University and graduated from Mayville State University with a Bachelor's of Science in Education. He taught school at De Lacs, ND, Dickinson, ND, Westby, MT and Flaxton, ND. Vernon was united in marriage to Grace Larson on January 6, 1961 in Aberdeen, SD. The couple moved to Grafton in August of 1966 where he began working as the Recreation Director for the Grafton Developmental Center. Vernon retired in 1994 and the couple continued to make their home in Grafton until the time of his death. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf and all sports. He loved spending time with his family and friends. He will be terribly missed. Vernon is survived by his wife Grace Herbel, Grafton, ND; children: Steven Herbel, Grafton, ND; Joy Nielsen, Chicago, IL; Wade Herbel, Grafton, ND; grandson Connor Nielsen, Chicago, IL; brothers: Dellas (Betty) Herbel, Elroy (Jo) Herbel, Gilbert (Elna Mae) Herbel, Ray (Carla) Herbel; sisters: LaVerne (Edwin) Grossman, Lorraine (Les) Christian and Marion (Bob) Albrecht. Several nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings: Iris, Marvin and Donald. Memorial Services will be Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at 1:00 P.M. at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Grafton. Friends may call at the Funeral Home for one hour prior to the service.
