Torfin Evenson

December 25, 1917 — November 18, 2008

Torfin E. Evenson, age 90, of Grafton, ND, passed away peacefully at the Meritcare Hospitalin Fargo on Tuesday morning November 18, 2008.

Torfin E. Evenson was born on December 25, 1917 the son of the late Walter and Ragnild (Midboe) Evenson. He attended elementary school at the Monson School, District 114, Fertile Township in Walsh County. He attended high school at the Walsh County Agricultural and Training School in Park River, graduating in 1935. While in high school, he participated in a number of music groups, including a men???s quartet and solo appearances at the Winter Fair. After graduation, he worked as a Farm Laborer in the Mandt-Hoople area of Walsh County. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on November 11, 1938.  He served on the heavy cruiser U.S.S. Minneapolis in the South Pacific in WWII. He was discharged October 10, 1945 at Santa Cruz, CA. He married Delores L. Gjevre at Hoople, ND on December 7, 1945. They were married for the past 62 years. Torfin attended NDSU from 1946-1949 earning a BS in Agriculture with a minor in Ag Education. He taught Vocational Agriculture from 1949 to 1954 at Minto, ND. He was employed by the Soil Conservation Service, U.S. Government at both the Park River and Grafton offices from 1954-1977; retiring in 1977 with 31 years of government service.

Torfin was a member of the Paul Farup American Legion Post in Park River for over 60 years. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, and a member of the Senior Citizens Club in Grafton.  He was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Park River and sang in the Our Saviour's Choir.

Torfin is survived by his wife Delores; two children: Deanna Painovich of Williams, MN and Terrance Evenson of Hoople, ND; five grandchildren: Blaine Thomas, Ryan Thomas, Christie Kupsc, Shawn Evenson, and Troy Evenson and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in d eath by his parents, Walter and Ragnild Evenson, one brother Wallace, who lost his life in Normandy in 1944, WWII, three uncles and eleven aunts.

Funeral services will be held at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Grafton on Saturday, November 22, 2008 at 2:00 P.M. Friends may call on Saturday for one hour prior to the service.  Interment will be at Zion Lutheran Cemetery of Rural Hoople, ND. Military rites will be provided by the Paul Farup American Legion Post of Park River.
