Beulah Olgeirson, 88, passed away on 11 Nov, 2008, at the Good Samaritan Center, Osnabrock, ND, from age related health problems.
Sigurbjorg Beulah Thorsteinson was born May 31, 1920, at the rural Gardar Township (Pembina County) home of her parents, Anna Margret (Jonasson) and Valdimar Jacob Thorsteinson.
She graduated from Gardar High School and received a Nursing degree from the University of Minnesota.
She also trained with the Army Nurse Cadet Corps, but WWII ended and she was not called to serve. She worked as a County Health Nurse in Mott, ND, (Hettinger County) and a Public Health Nurse in New York City prior to her marriage to Barney on March 17, 1956. Later that year, they packed a large car and pulled a trailer house up the gravel Alaska-Canada Highway to Anchorage, AK, where she worked as a Public Health Nurse and he as a vehicle maintenance supervisor at Richardson Army Base. Beulah loved narrating slide shows of their Alaska adventures, which included rafting, moose hunting, salmon fishing, and watching the sled dog races. They retired to Belen, NM, in the 1970's. Beulah was well known for her cooking and baking abilities, especially for her exceptional brown bread, which was a best seller at volunteer fire department fund raisers and a favorite among relatives. After Barney passed away in 1998, Beulah moved back to North Dakota and resided at the Borg Pioneer Memorial Home, Mountain, and the Good Samaritan Center, Osnabrock.
Beulah was preceded in death by her husband Olgeir Bjarni "Barney" Olgeirson; sisters and brothers-in-law E. Ruth and Bjorn Olgeirson, H. Joyce and Gisli Sampson, Agnes and King Sannes, Violet and Melvin Jorgenson, V. Raymond and Carol Thorsteinson, and Joe Simundson; Brothers Vilhjelmur J. "Bill" Thorsteinson, and Johannes T. "Joe" Thorsteinson; eleven of Barney's brothers and sisters; and double nephew Gary B. Olgeirson.
She is survived by brother Orville A. (Elaine) Thorsteinson, Merillville, IN; sisters Mae V. (Herb) Heideman, Medford, OR; and Valgerdur Anna "Valley Ann" Simundson, Grand Forks; sister in law Sigrun Olgeirson Sigurdson; double nephew and niece, Robert J. Olgeirson and Shirley J. Olgeirson, both of Bismarck; and many nieces and nephews from the Olgeirson and Thorsteinson family trees.
A Celebration of Life/Memorial Service for Beulah will be held next summer, with interment in the Gardar Pioneer Cemetery.
The family requests that memorials be sent to the Borg Pioneer Memorial Home, Mountain; the Good Samaritan Center, Osnabrock; or the Icelandic Communities Association, Mountain.
The Tollefson Funeral Home of Edinburg, ND is assisting with arrangements.
