Russell D. "Red" Eikenberry, age 88 of Grafton, ND passed away Tuesday, October 3, 2012 at the Lutheran Sunset Home of Grafton after a long courageous battle with Multiple Sclerosis. Russell D. Eikenberry was born February 7, 1924 in Grafton, ND, the son of the late Wilbur Sabin and Katie Bell (Roney) Eikenberry. He attended rural country school near Auburn, ND and graduated from Grafton High School. Following his education he enlisted in the United States Army. Upon his discharge he lived in California for a short time. He moved back to Grafton and purchased Red's News and Sports, which became a popular place for the community and kids. Russell was united in marriage to Ila Bjerke on March 18, 1957 in Crookston, MN. The couple made their home in Grafton. Red ran his store for 27 years until his health forced him to retire. After his retirement the couple moved to Grand Forks. Red moved to the Lutheran Sunset Home in 2004. He was a member of the Grafton Federated Church and the Eagle's Club. Red is survived by his children: Amber Houdek, Grand Forks, ND; Bruce (Kristy) Eikenberry, Grafton, ND; grandchildren: Dustin (Mel) Houdek, Moorhead, MN; Danielle (Kyle) Houdek, St. Cloud, MN; four great grandchildren and sister Imogene Hanson, Yakima, WA. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Ila, step-son Phillip Carrico and seven brothers and sisters. Memorial services will be Friday, October 5, 2012 at 6:30 P.M. at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Grafton. Visitation will be Friday from 5-6:30 P.M. at the funeral home.
