Roy W. Myhre, age 97 of Park River, passed away on Saturday, September 3, 2016 at the Park River Good Samaritan Center.
Roy Myhre was born on August 22, 1919 in Winger, MN, the son of the late John and Tilda (Grindahl) Myhre. He attended country school in Dundee Township. In his later teens, he and some of his friends hopped boxcars from Park River to Washington state where they found work in the lumber industry and orchards. He enlisted in the military in Oregon and was stationed in England during WWII. Following his discharge he worked in copper mines in Montana, farmed near Park River and in Minnesota, and dug water wells. He was united in marriage to Juanita Thompson on October 23, 1949 in Williams, MN. The couple made their home near Park River. He retired from farming in 1989 and began working doing custom combining and as a hired hand into his eighties. He and Juanita took time in the winters to travel the southern and western US to visit family and friends. Juanita passed away on October 20, 2002. He was able to travel to Washington D.C in 2009 on the Honor Flight to see the WWII Memorial with his daughter. This was a real joy for him. He moved into the Good Samaritan Center in 2014.
He was a member of the Park Center Lutheran Church of Rural Hoople, the Davidson American Legion Post of Edinburg, ND and was a past member of the Dundee School Board and a square dancing club. He loved to take drives to check how the crops were doing or just to visit. He was a people person who loved visiting and the art of conversation.
Roy is survived by his children: Vicki (Gary) Lien, Grand Forks, ND, Vera (Bob) Ray, Battle Ground WA, Ross Myhre, Hensel, ND George Myhre, Park River, ND, special brother-in-law Dale Thompson, Park River, ND, grandchildren: Perry Lien, Heather Lien, Trista Ray, Travis Ray, Timothy Ray, Richard Myhre, Amy Myhre, Johnathan Myhre, and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son Steve, infant daughter Jill, grandson Christopher Myhre, and sister Bella.
Memorial services will be Thursday, September 8, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. at the Victory Free Lutheran Church of Park River. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Military rites will be provided by the Davidson American Legion Post and the North Dakota National Guard Honor Guard. Inurnment will be at the Park Center Lutheran Cemetery of Rural Hoople.
