Robert D. "Bob" Johnson, age 77 of Grafton, ND passed away on Friday, October 20, 2023 at his home.
Robert Dell “Bob” was born June 19, 1946 to the late Herman and Mamie (Karlstad) Johnson in Roseau, MN. He was raised on the family farm in Goodridge, MN. In 1959, Bob’s family moved to Grafton, ND attending Grafton Public Schools. During high school, he worked at Lee’s Standard Station. In 1964, Bob enlisted in the US Navy at age 17. He attended Navy Sonar School in San Diego, CA. In 1965, he joined the Vietnam War onboard the USS Wilhoite DER-397 until his discharge in August 1967.
Upon returning home, Bob began working for Paul Janousek Construction, then Schumacher & Sons as a mechanic. He settled back in ND in 1972 after a short residence in California. Bob united in marriage to Martha Johnson on June 3, 1977. They settled in Grafton, where they raised their family. Bob began working at LSTC in 1980 and retired from there 28 years later. He loved his family dearly and enjoyed attending his children and grandchildren’s activities. He would routinely be seen cheering on the hockey team and other sports. He and Martha were Boy Scout leaders for many years. Bob loved his animals, neighbors and his community. He was especially proud of his 43 years of sobriety.
Bob will be missed by his wife Martha; his children: Troy (Darcy) Johnson, Hazen, ND, Tammy (Chuck) Rezac, Northfield, MN, Jacob (Mandie) Johnson, Buxton, ND, Michael Johnson, Grafton, ND, Casey (Kasi) Johnson, Oslo, MN; 16 grandchildren and one great grandchild on the way; sister Marlette Schultz, Garden Grove, CA; brother-in-law: Rodney Anderson; sister-in-law: Irene Johnson; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Jonathan, brother Roger Johnson, and sister LouAnn Anderson.
Funeral Services will be on Wednesday, October 25, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. at Bethel Free Lutheran Church of Grafton. Visitation will be on Tuesday, October 24, 2023 from 5-7 p.m. at Tollefson Funeral Home of Grafton, with a time of sharing at 7 p.m. Friends may also call at the church an hour prior to the service. Burial will be at St. Peters Cemetery in Rural Cavalier, ND.
