In Loving Memory of Robert Gene Dietrich December 1, 1945 – September 26, 2025
Robert Gene Dietrich, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 26, 2025, at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, ND, at the age of 79.
Born to Jacob and Isabel (Mozinski) Dietrich in Drayton, North Dakota, Bob was raised on the family farm outside Glasston. He went to school in a one-room schoolhouse in Glasston through eighth grade. He graduated from St. Thomas High School in 1963. In 1966, Bob enlisted in the National Guard, a commitment he held with pride. He was honorably discharged in July of 1972. His dedication to service continued throughout his life as an active member of the Ottum-Ball American Legion Post 168 for over 50 years.
Bob built a long and respected career with the North Dakota State Seed Department, working as a potato inspector. He found joy in mentoring young people through Hunter Safety instruction in St. Thomas, sharing his love of the outdoors and responsible stewardship. He also valued his many years as a St. Thomas Park Board member.
In 1968, Bob married Wanda Rawlins, and together they welcomed two daughters, Andrea and Rebecca. They were married for ten years. He was united in marriage to Mona Kay Smallbeck on June 20, 1980, and they were blessed with two children, Jessica and Darrin. They made their home in St. Thomas, and it was there that they raised their family. Bob’s greatest pride was his family—he was a devoted grandpa/papa to 18 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him immense joy. He was honored to be called “papa” by many other children whom he held dear.
Bob loved spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed shooting, hunting, fishing, watching the Minnesota Twins and NASCAR, and taking care of his yard. He cherished family trips—especially to Florida—and could often be found cruising around on his golf cart or Ranger. Bob had a gift for making others laugh with his signature Dad jokes and delighted in cooking for loved ones. He treasured the special “Sisters + Bob” trips, which were filled with laughter, stories, and unforgettable memories. Whether shaking dice for coffee at the café or playing pull tabs, Bob brought warmth and humor to every moment.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mona Kay; his children: Andrea (Theron) Todd of Ocean Breeze, FL; Rebecca (Jaden) Bender of Hope, ND; Jessica Gunderson of Drayton, ND; and Darrin (Kelli) Dietrich of Fargo, ND; 18 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; siblings: Margaret Smith, Esther Fisher, Diane (Herb) Vansickle, and Dennis (Linda) Dietrich; “outlaws:” Michael Hartje, Tom Eidsvold, and Mary Dietrich; in-laws: Carol Snortland, Steven (Sandy) Smallbeck, and Timothy (Valerie) Smallbeck; along with many nieces and nephews.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents: Jacob and Isabel; siblings: Joan Eidsvold, Donald Dietrich, and Cynthia Hartje; “outlaws:” Harvey Smith and Robert Fisher; and in-laws: Diane Erickson and Susan (Curt) Albright.
Bob’s legacy is one of warmth, loyalty, and laughter. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
