Phyllis Shirley Koppang, age 87, of Adams, ND passed away on Sunday, May 24, 2015 at First Care Health Center of Park River. Phyllis was born September 4, 1927 in Grafton, ND the daughter of the late Oscar and Josie (Flom) Sunderland. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Adams. She attended grade school at rural Sylvesta District 103 and graduated from Fairdale High School. She attended Mayville State Teacher's College and taught rural schools for seven years. In later years she was a substitute teacher and teacher's aide at the Adams Public School. Phyllis married Victor Koppang June 14, 1953. To this couple, four children were born. They lived on a farm near Mayville for nine years. In 1963 they purchased the Sunderland farm near Adams. She was formerly a member Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church, Fairdale and presently a member of Mountain Lutheran Church, Adams. She was a Sunday School teacher and a member of Rebecca/Joy Circle, Women's Quilters and WELCA. She was a active in the District 16 Republican party and served on the election board for many years. Phyllis is survived by her children: Naomi (Mark) Owen, Apple Valley, MN; Candyce (James) Levine, Lyman, WY; Rebecca (Richard) Sellheim, Salol, MN; Daniel (Sharalyn) Koppang, Adams, ND; 11 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren; her sisters: Adeline (Winten) Gunderson, Donna Rogers and Virginia Lebus; her brother, Stanley (Hope) Sunderland; sisters-in-law: Helen Stand, Solveig (Marvin) Flaten, Marilyn Koppang, Judy Koppang and brother-in-law, Lloyd Erickson. Several nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Victor; sisters: Opal and Gloria Lynne; infant brother David; infant granddaughter, Abby and numerous other family members. Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at 10:30 A.M. at Mountain Lutheran Church, Adams, ND. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-7 PM at the Tollefson Funeral Home, Park River, ND. Friends may also call at the church on Wednesday for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, rural Adams.
