Orlyn Nygard

April 4, 1935 — October 19, 2020

Orlyn Nygard, age 85 of Park River, ND formerly of Edinburg, passed away on Monday, October 19, 2020, with Sharon, his loving wife of 35 years, by his side.

Orlyn was born to Edwin and Alda (Steen) Nygard on April 4, 1935 at the Nygard Family farm, west of Edinburg, ND. He attended grade school in a one-room country school just south of the farm. He started high school in Edinburg and graduated from Grafton High School. In 1952 Orlyn married Joyce Johnson and they had five children. They had a love for music and he enjoyed playing his guitar and singing. Together they worked in the church music and youth ministries until her death in 1976, leaving Orlyn to raise their three youngest children by himself.

A multi-talented business entrepreneur, Orlyn farmed, had an excavation business, along with plumbing, heating and carpentry services. In 1978 he opened Nygard Bolt and Supply. Orlyn enjoyed making his customers happy and visiting with them. His customer base soon became his friends. He prided himself on this motto: “We run our business by the Golden Rule.” The business remains in the family and is still thriving today.

In 1985 Orlyn met and married Sharon Sprunk, who brought great joy and fullness to his life. Together they worked hand in hand to expand Nygard Bolt & Supply. They also loved to travel; their favorite trip being an annual visit to Medora for the musical. Orlyn had a wonderful laugh and a great sense of humor, often laughing until he cried. His biggest passions were his love of God, his wife, family then work.

Orlyn was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Alda; sisters: Aldys Benjaminson, LaVonne Cernik and his first wife Joyce. He will be dearly missed by his loving wife, Sharon; his children: Karen (Raymond) Gutterud, Gary (Deborah) Nygard, Laurie (Randy) Thompson, Mark Nygard and Wendy (Loren) Machart; 10 grandchildren: Theresa Sack, Susan (Jason) Groves, Chris Gutterud, Stephen (Sherry) Nygard, Stacey Nygard, David Lueker, Jonny (Heather) Thompson, Damin Nygard, Elaine Nygard, Craig (Kari) Machart; 20 great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren; his sisters: Sharon (Charles) Troftgruben, Nancy (Jim) Ludwick-Hassey, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many other loving relatives and friends.
