October 21, 1927 — January 29, 2011

Norman D. Carlson, age 83 of Park River ND and formerly of Lankin, ND passed away on Saturday, January 29, 2011 at the Good Samaritan Center of Larimore, ND. Norman D. Carlson was born October 21, 1927 in Cleveland Township, Walsh County, ND the son of the late Christ and Bessie (Midthun) Carlson where he attended rural school. Following his education he started farming with his father. In 1950 he began serving in the United States Army, in Korea. Following his discharge in 1952 he returned to Walsh County and continued farming. Norman was united in marriage to Alice Monson on June 19, 1953 at the Hoff Lutheran Church. The couple lived and farmed in Norton Township until 2008 when they moved into Park River. Norman was a member of the Hoff Lutheran Church and served on church boards. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and past commander of the Lankin Bosh-Ryba American Legion Post #157. He served on the School Board, Harvest States Elevator Board and was involved in 4-H county fairs. Norman was the best-ever husband, father and grandfather. He loved helping and caring for his family, friends and anyone in need. Visiting relatives was his idea of a great vacation, but home was always his favorite place to be. He is survived by his wife Alice of Park River, ND; his children: Kaye Carlson, Grand Forks, ND; Beth (Richard) Carlson, Grand Forks, ND; Russel, (Candy) Carlson; Lankin, ND; Noreen (Paul) Hagness, Pembina, ND; twelve grandchildren: Eryn (Nick) Hagadone, BryAnn Schroeder, Lucas Bina, Brooke Bina, Chris (Connie) Carlson, Jared (Crissy) Carlson, Jennifer Carlson, Wade (Lara) Carlson, Jacob Carlson, Katherine (Ryan) Olson, Cassandra Hagness and Marcus Hagness; six great grandchildren: Marcus Jay Carlson, Elle Carlson, Romann Carlson, Wyatt Carlson, Noah Olson, Jocelyn Olson; sisters: Lorna Maughlin, Renton, WA; Judy Bondy, West Fargo, ND; brothers-in-law: Milt Benson, Bainbridge Island, WA; Clair Kroke, Fordville, ND; sister-in-law: Shirley Carlson, Lankin, ND, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three infant daughters, brothers: Conrad, Olger and Reuben and sisters: Blanche Carlson, Lyla Benson and Donna Kroke, brothers-in-law: Galen Bondy, Chuck Maughlin and sister-in-law: Ione Carlson. Funeral services will be Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at the Mountain Lutheran Church of Adams, ND. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-7 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Park River. Friends may also call at the church on Wednesday for one hour prior to the service. Military rites will be provided by the Lankin Bosh-Ryba American Legion Post #157. Interment will be at the Hoff Lutheran Cemetery, rural Adams.
