Milton P. Hjelmstad

Milton P. Hjelmstad, age 69 of Park River, ND passed away Sunday, October 2, 2011 at the Altru Hospital of Grand Forks, ND. Milton P. Hjelmstad was born October 7, 1941 in Grafton, ND the son of the late Bjarne and Inez (Hilde) Hjelmstad. He attended schools in Adams, ND graduating from Adams High School. He served in the United States Navy from 1959-1963. Following his discharge he attended Aaker's Business College in Grand Forks. He was united in marriage to Cathy Grant on December 5, 1964 in Adams, ND. The couple lived in Stephen, MN where he worked as a parts man for Lundeen Motors. He later managed the Hegman Elevator in Portal, ND. In 1982 the couple purchased the H&H Standard Station in Park River which he owned and operated for several years. He later worked for Hankey Farms and Marvin Windows. Milton was a member of the Paul Farup American Legion Post #147 and served as American Legion District Commander. Milt is survived by his wife Cathy, Park River, ND; children: Christy (Lynn) Sjoblom, Karlstad, MN; Cheri (Mike) Douglas, Stephen, MN; Cindy (David) Kuznia, Stephen, MN; Caryn Hjelmstad (Danny McWhorter), Franklin, TN; nine grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and siblings: Betty Lou Hillman, Rugby, ND; Mavis (Gary) Troftgruben, Harvey, ND; Skip (Jean) Hjelmstad, Adams, ND; his Aunt, Verna Olson, Park River, ND. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother, godchild: Tressa Marie Hjelmstad, brother-in-law Ken Hillman and mother-in-law: Amelia Grant. Funeral services will be Friday, October 7, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church of Park River. Visitation will be Friday for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at West Adams Cemetery, rural Adams, ND. Military rites will be provided by the Paul Farup American Legion Post #147 and the North Dakota National Guard Honor Guard.
