Melvyn Lewis Hilkemeier, age 83, passed away Tuesday, March 12, 2019, at the Good Samaritan Center in Park River, ND.
Melvyn (Buddy) Hilkemeier was born October 20, 1935, to Clarence and Elnora (Roeber) Hilkemeier in Crandon Township, SD. He graduated from Redfield High School. He met Marlys Amundrud while attending school in Minneapolis. He and Marlys were married September 20, 1958. Together they raised three daughters.
Melvyn spent the first part of his life farming the family farm in Redfield, SD. He then went on to build houses. He moved to Texas around 1979 where he worked as a city building inspector for the city of Allen, TX until his retirement in 2000.
He was a member of the South Dakota National Guard and transferred to Texas National Guard until his retirement with an honorable discharge. While in Texas, he was a member of the Texas Model Railroad Club. He also was part of a square dancing group.
The last couple of years of his life he spent in North Dakota spending time with his daughters, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
He is survived by his sister, Sharrol (Delbert) Kuehn, Wabasso, MN; daughters: Dawn Beardemphl (Stuart Nelson), Adams, ND; and Lila Hilkemeier, Grand Forks, ND; son-in-law, Tony Smith (Robin Smith), Mt Vernon, TX; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Robin Smith, sister, Joan Meyer, and nephew, Ronnie Kuehn.
