Mary Buchholtz, age 98 of Grafton, ND passed away Friday, January 19, 2018 at her home in Grafton.
Mary Richardson was born May 25, 1919 in Vermillion, South Dakota, the daughter of the late Harlan and Fannie (Carnahan) Richardson. She attended school at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion earning her Teacher’s Certificate in 1940. She then attended Mayville State University, receiving a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Education in 1970. She taught school in South Dakota and North Dakota (St. Thomas, Bowesmont and Crystal). Mary was united in marriage to Erwin Buchholtz on November 23, 1944 in St. Thomas, ND. The couple made their home near St. Thomas and farmed. Erwin passed away on May 1, 2004.
She was an active member of the United Methodist Church. Taught Sunday school and held offices in United Methodist Women. She was an active member in the Homemaker’s Club, Lyceum Club, Eastern Star, St. Thomas City Cemetery Board, Unity Hospital Auxiliary and the Grafton Federated Church Bible Study group. She enjoyed handwork, China painting and reading.
Mary is survived by her children: Dennis (Joy) Buchholtz, Bemidji, MN; Richard (Marilyn) Buchholtz, St. Thomas, ND; Janice (James) Aasand, Grafton, ND; grandchildren: Kelsey (Jason) Selander, Dan (Amy) Buchholtz, Katie Buchholtz, Candace Anderson, Josh (Jennifer Murphy) Anderson, Taylor (Jesse Liila) Aasand and Jacob Aasand; great-grandchildren: Sara and Brendan Buchholtz and Jameson Selander; twin sister, Margaret Skinner. Several nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her husband, Erwin of 59 ½ years, parents, step-mother, Marie, three brothers; John, Charles and Ralph and a baby sister.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at 2:30 P.M. at the St. Thomas United Methodist Church of St. Thomas. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at the St. Thomas City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the St. Thomas United Methodist Church.
