Marvin Lee Laaveg age 78 of Park River, ND passed away on Wednesday, April 22, 2020 at the First Care Health Center of Park River.
Marvin was born April 16, 1942 in Grafton, ND the son of the late Willie and Josephine (Lovaasen) Laaveg. He attended rural schools west of Park River and graduated from the Walsh County Agricultural School in 1960. Following his graduation he farmed with his father. Marvin enlisted in the North Dakota National Guard and Reserves, serving for six years. Marvin was united in marriage to Margie Thompson on Dec. 28, 1963 in Park River. Marvin held many types of winter jobs including: driving Standard Oil fuel truck for nine winters, drove school bus part-time for four years and later purchased a semi-truck and hauled grain to Duluth. After 45 years of farming, he retired and took summer employment as the caretaker of Memorial Park Cemetery for 12 years.
He was a past member of Golden Valley Church, Pleasant Valley Church and Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church. He was presently a member of Victory Free Lutheran Church in Park River. He served on the Golden Valley Cemetery Board for a number of years. Marvin’s favorite free time activities included family weekend camping, wood working and motorcycling. He and Margie made several camping trips on the bike. He especially enjoyed the 33 years of family reunions with Margie’s family. Marvin was a quiet, thoughtful man with a great love for his family and God.
Marvin is survived by his wife of 56 years, Margie Laaveg; his sons: Wayne (Tracy) Laaveg, Park River, ND; Douglas (Cindy) Laaveg, Minto, ND; daughters: Sherri (Craig) Sobolik, Pisek, ND; Jennifer (Ronald) Thompson, Park River, ND; 14 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; his sister, Lorie (Donavan) Bender, Venturia, ND; niece, Elizabeth Bender and nephew: Matthew Austermann. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister and brother-in-law, Linda and David Austermann, Lake Orion, MI.
Private family services will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2020 at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Park River. A video of the funeral service will be posted on the Tollefson Funeral Home website. In lieu of flowers the family would prefer memorials made to a charity of the donor’s choice. Interment will be at Golden Valley Cemetery, Rural Park River, ND.
