Lucille Norma Young

Lucille N. Young age 81 of Grafton, ND passed away on Monday, August 22, 2016 at her daughter’s home in Minot, ND under the care of Trinity Hospice.

Lucille Norma Helland was born November 7, 1934 at Deaconess Hospital in Grafton, ND the daughter of the late Oscar and Eleanor (Anderson) Helland. She grew up on the family farm near Auburn, ND. She graduated from Grafton High School on May 27, 1952. She met Donald Young in November of 1952 while roller skating at the Grafton Armory. They married May 3, 1953 and built their lives together in Grafton.

Lucille was a stay at home mother and homemaker to five children. She enjoyed baking brownies, cookies,cakes and was famous for her homemade buns. Neighbors were often recipients of her delicious baked goods. She enjoyed refinishing hidden furniture treasures she found or was given throughout the years. She would spend many hours lovingly sanding and staining each piece of furniture; which she proudly displayed throughout her home.

Lucille valued her Norwegian heritage and treasured family heirlooms passed down to her from her Norwegian grandparents. She was warmly welcomed back to her grandfather’s home in Vestnes (Helland) Norway in 2002 by representatives of the village and honored with several hymns by the local parish priest in Vestnes Church. Lucille, Donald and her family were guests at a reunion at the Grand Hotel in Andalnes, Norway; arranged by local relatives.

Over the past 45 years, Lucille and Donald spent their summers camping and enjoying evening by the campfire at various area campgrounds with family and friends. She was a long time member of the Grafton Federated Church.

Lucille and Donald loved to spend time with their grandchildren over the years. She would frequently spend extended periods helping with child care and lending aid in times of illness.

Lucille is survived by her husband of 63 years, Donald Young, her daughters: Terri (Cliff) Nelson, Minot, ND; Tracy Young, Gilbert, AZ; sons: Steve (Paivi) Young, Moorhead, MN; and Greg (Tammy) Young, Grafton, ND; her grandchildren: Michael and Ryan Nelson, Kristen Ferreira; Eeva Greenley; Heidi Worker, Ashley and Jordan Young and eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, son, Gordon, brothers: Gordon and Glenn Helland and sister, Judith Helland.

Funeral services will be Saturday, August 27, 2016 at 2:00 PM at the Federated Church, Grafton, ND. Visitation will be Friday from 5-7 PM with a prayer service at 7; 00 PM at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Grafton. Friends may also call at the church on Saturday for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the Grafton City Cemetery.
