Louis W. Hass, age 91died of cancer on Monday, May 25, 2009 at his farm home in rural Grafton. Louis was born in Swanville, MN on June 2, 1917 to Louis and Ida (Schultz) Hass. He moved to North Dakota when he was seventeen years old to join his sister, Lydia, and his mother's family. He married Evelyn Miller on June 8, 1940 and they began farming in rural Grafton. Evelyn died December 31, 1974. Louis married Phyllis (Hartje) Martin on November 25, 1978. They resided on the farm and Louis continued to farm until his retirement in 1982.
Louis was an active member of the Zion English Lutheran Church, Grafton, where he served as elder, financial secretary, Sunday School teacher, usher, and choir member. He was a member of the Lutheran Laymen's League and the Zion English Lutheran Church Men's Club. He served on the Acton Township Board and the Acton School Board. He was a member of the Fair Oaks Golf Club. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, bowling, music, gardening, sports, traveling and especially spending time with his family. He loved his farm, and even in his declining years, he continued to enjoy the rural life.
Louis is survived by his wife, Phyllis of Grafton, ND; his daughter, Judy Anderson of Grafton; his grandchildren, Tim (Kristi) Numedahl, Thief River Falls, MN; Scott (Jayne) Anderson, Auburn, WA; Laurie (Perry) Borth, Grand Forks, ND; his great grandchildren: Randi, Morgan, and Jacob Numedahl of Thief River Falls, MN and Zane, Moriah and Jonah Borth of Grand Forks, ND; son-in-law Tom (Marie) Numedahl of Brainerd, MN. Louis is also survived by Phyllis' sons: Randy (Teresa) Reichert, Nunn, CO; Jay (Deb) Reichert, Maple Plain, MN; Phyllis' daughter Jill Johnson of New Brighton, MN; Phyllis' grandchildren; Nikki (Jason) Littlefield, Megan Johnson, Kristina Reichert, Jason (Jennifer) Reichert, Sam Reichert, Jake Reichert, Phyllis' great grandchildren: Kaia Anderson, Cooper Anderson, Sophie Littelfield, Katy Reichert, Phyllis' step-children: Myrna Erickson and her family and Glenn Martin and his family.
Louis was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Evelyn; daughter Jeanette (Hass) Numedahl; his granddaughter Sheryl Numedahl; his sister Lydia (Miller) Carter and his son-in-law Wayne Anderson.
Funeral services will be Friday, May 29, 2009 at 10:30 A.M. at the Zion English Lutheran Church of Grafton, ND. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-7 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Grafton. Friends may also call at the church on Friday for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the Grafton Lutheran Cemetery.
