Lon D Nygard

Lon Dale Nygard, age 65, of Edinburg, ND passed away on Saturday, May 21, 2016 at his home.

Lon was born April 3, 1951 in Grafton, ND the son of Joseph and Alvina (Sholey) Nygard. He was baptized and confirmed at Odalen Lutheran Church rural Edinburg. He attended Tiber School District #77 through fourth grade and then attended Edinburg School District #106 graduating in May 1969. Lon graduated from Lake Region Junior College in May 1972 and returned to farm in partnership with his Dad in Tiber Township. Lon received an Honorable Discharge in 1975 from the Army National Guard of North Dakota, 957th Engineer Company. Lon and Melinda were united in marriage on July 8, 1972 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Edinburg and made their home in Tiber Township where Lon had cattle and continued to farm.

Tiber Township was a special place for Lon and he enjoyed time spent with the “Coffee Crew”. Lon enjoyed a good conversation with friends over coffee or playing cards and was especially proud of his two grandsons. Lon enjoyed deer hunting season and going for a drive to check on the fields.

Lon had served on the Edinburg School Board, Edinburg Fire Department, Edinburg Booster Club, and the Edinburg Quick Response Unit. Lon was a past Trustee of Grace Free Lutheran Church and was currently a Tiber Township Supervisor and a member of the Edinburg American Legion Post 156. Lon is a charter member of Grace Free Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife, Melinda; daughter Shelli and son-in-law Tim Langerud; grandsons Jacob and Garrett; sister Jennifer (Glenn) Ohma, niece JoAnn Ohma, nephew Jared (Christine) Ohma, great niece Claire Ohma, aunts Carol Levin and Mildred Sholey and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and several aunts and uncles.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. at the Grace Free Lutheran Church of Edinburg. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Military rites will be provided by the Edinburg American Legion Post #156 and the North Dakota National Guard Honor Guard. Interment will be at the Odalen Lutheran Cemetery of Rural Edinburg.
