Leonard R. "Bart" Hankey, age 90 of Park River, ND passed away on Sunday, December 28, 2014 at Parkwood Place in Grand Forks. "Bart" as he was known to everyone, was born November 16, 1924 at Grafton, ND the son of the late Leonard J. and Jessie (Woods) Hankey. He grew up in rural Park River and graduated from the Walsh County Agricultural School in 1942. He farmed with his father on the family farm and on June 20, 1951 was united in marriage to Irene Bena at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Park River. Following their marriage they farmed in Park River and Red Lake Falls, MN. In 1958 they returned to Park River and in 1966 Bart began employment with the North Dakota State Seed Department as a small grain and potato inspector. He retired in 1986. Bart has been an active member of the Knights of Columbus since 1960. He has served as Grand Knight of the 3rd Degree and was Faithful Navigator of the 4th Degree. He was honored by Knights of Columbus Council 5055 in 2000 for forty years of service to the organization. He was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church where he served as Trustee and Eucharistic Minister. He was a member of the Park River Fire Department and was past-president and secretary of the organization. Bart enjoyed the outdoors and gardening. Gardening was a great retirement pastime for him and he shared the bounty of his garden with others. He liked to keep busy and worked with the Park River Park Board to keep the parks and children's play areas well maintained. He was always willing to help others whenever help was needed. He was a volunteer at the Senior Center and for many years he delivered meals to the homebound. Bart is survived by his wife Irene of Park River, ND; son Robert "Bob" (Cindy) Hankey, Longview, MN; daughters: Susan (Tony) May, Cedar Rapids, IA and Ann (Don) Dalbey, Noyes, MN; nine grandchildren: Blake (Kelsey) Hankey, Drs. Brandon (Kelsey) Hankey, Ben Hankey, Maren Hankey, Aaron and Marita May, Dixie (Jake) Sele, Dustin and Shannon Dalbey, two great grandchildren: Lucas and Triton. He is also survived by his sisters: Adele Hankey and Lucyle "Pud" Thompson, of Park River, ND. Several nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers: Marvin, John and Paul. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, January 2, 2015 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Park River, ND. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-7 with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Park River. Friends may also call at the church on Friday for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the Calvary Cemetery in Park River in the spring.
