Leona R Walstad

Leona R. Walstad, age 87 of Park River, ND passed away on Tuesday, September 22, 2015 at First Care Health Center of Park River. Leona Ruth Mauritson was born January 10, 1928 in Park River, ND the daughter of the late Garfield and Ruth (Coulter) Mauritson. She graduated from the Walsh County Agricultural School in 1945 and graduated from the St. John's School of Nursing in Fargo, ND in 1948. Following her education, Leona worked in Colorado for a year. She returned to Park River and started working for Dr. Weed. She later worked for Dr. Piltingsrud and Dr. Barrie. Leona then worked for several years as a Registered Nurse at St. Ansgar's Hospital and the Park River Good Samaritan Center, retiring in 1998. Leona was united in marriage to Percy Walstad on September 3, 1950 at the Federated Church in Park River, ND. He passed away on Feb. 7, 2007. Leona moved to the Good Samaritan Center in Park River in January of 2014. She was a member of the Park River Federated Church, P.E.O., and Park River American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed quilting and knitting and was active in the Walsh County Women's Curling League. Leona had several dogs over her life time that she considered as, "my children in fur coats". Leona is survived by her sister, Gail Meberg, Park River, ND; brother-in-law, Wayne (Kay) Walstad, Houston, TX; sisters-in-law, Delores Longtin, Walhalla, ND and Glenna (Harvey) Tallackson, Park River, ND; six Mauritson nephews, DJ, Arne, Lynn & Dean Meberg and Mark & John Kassing; several Walstad nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister, Maxine Kassing, brothers-in-law, Urby Meberg and Walter Kassing, several Walstad brothers and sisters in law and nephews. Funeral services will be Saturday, September 26, 2015 at 2:00 PM at the Federated Church of Park River. Visitation will be Friday from 5-7 with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Park River. Friends may also call at the church on Saturday for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Park River, ND. In lieu of flowers, it is asked that memorials be given to either the Federated Church of Park River or to Chapter Q of the PEO Sisterhood.
