Leona Marie Schuster entered eternal life August 10
th
at the age of 87. Leona was born on March 19th, 1933 in the family home in rural Warsaw to Theodore and Eugenia (Rogalla) Gerszewski. She attended school at St. Anthony’s and District 109 in Warsaw thru 8
th
grade. She then attended Minto High School before transferring and graduating from Grafton High School in 1950 at the age of 17. She earned her teaching degree from Mayville State Teacher’s college in 1951.
During high school and college, Leona worked to pay for her education, room and board by working as a housekeeper in the private residences she lived in. After graduating college, she taught grades 1 thru 8 at schools in Pulaski Township from 1951 thru 1953.
On May 19th, 1953, Leona married Herman Arnold Schuster at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Warsaw, ND. They lived by the old Highway 44 and operated Schuster's Ace Service. They started farming in 1955 until they moved to Warsaw in 1991.
Leona and Herman raised five sons; Roger, Dean, Wayne, Jeff and Brian and have 14 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Leona and Herman spent their summer months between their fishing home in Warroad, MN, and their home in Warsaw, ND. Their winter months were spent at their home in Mesa, AZ. Leona and Herman loved to travel, whether it was on international trips like Greece, Poland, Aruba, etc., or domestically with their motorhome - they were always on the go.
Leona was a member of the St. Stanislaus Catholic Church and Altar Society, Sacred Heart and Living Rosary Societies, Polish National Alliance and Country Gals Homemakers of Walsh County. Leona was a life-long baseball fan and loved cheering on her beloved Cubs. She loved cooking for her family, canning, gardening and playing cards and marbles with her grandchildren, who will miss her dearly. Leona also cherished the times when her nieces and nephews would come and stay at the farm to “help out” during the summer months.
Surviving Leona are 4 sons; Roger (Sandy) of Warsaw, ND; Wayne (Patricia) of Suwanee, GA; Jeff (Donna) of Raleigh, NC; and Brian (Mary) of Minto, ND; 14 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; brothers Lyle (Chris) of Phoenix, AZ; Melfred (Connie) of Coronado, CA; sister Delia (Jim) of Mesa, AZ; and sister-in-law Connie of Fargo, ND.
Leona is preceded in death by her husband Herman, parents Ted and Eugenia, brother Joseph, and son Dean.
Shed a tear with us today not for the loss we have incurred, but to celebrate the joy we all had with mom along the way.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, August 14, 2020 at 10:30 AM at the St. Stanislaus Catholic Church of Warsaw. Visitation will be Friday for one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to Minto Quick Response PO Box 168, Minto, ND 58261 or the St. Stanislaus Cemetery fund PO Box 316, Minto, ND 58261.
Social Distancing and face masks are required.
