Kenneth M. Anderson

Kenneth Merle Anderson , 93, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, October 17, at Pembina County Memorial Hospital in Cavalier, ND with his family at his side. Kenneth was born June 8, 1917 on a homestead near Columbus, ND to Clarence and Mae (Balfour) Anderson. Scarlet fever claimed the life of his mother and sister in 1925. In 1928 Kenneth and his five sisters moved to Cavalier County with his aunt and uncle, Pearly and Wilmina Anderson. There he attended Osnabrock Township School. He worked for his Uncle Pearly, drove truck for Syl Brown, and met his future wife, Alice Amundson when she started teaching at the Township School. Kenneth enlisted in the army in 1942 and served as a tank commander, landing on Normandy Beach and then moving across Europe into Germany. He received a Bronze Star for meritorious service and was honorably discharged in 1945. Kenneth and Alice were married on Sunday morning, September 29, 1946, at Hvideso Lutheran Church in Rural Edinburg. They made their home in Osnabrock Township on the family farm where they spent the next 56 years. In February 2002, Kenneth moved to Wedgewood Manor in Cavalier. He was a devoted husband and father of five children. He was an active member of Highland Lutheran Church and later Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church of Fairdale. He was a member of the Fairdale American Legion for over 60 years. He loved hunting, coffee hour at local cafes, taking his grandkids for treats and visiting with friends and family. All who knew him appreciated his keen sense of humor and his willingness to help those in need. Kenneth is survived by five children, 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Surviving children include Kaye (Garnet) Furstenau of Cavalier, Barbara (Russ) Overbye of Elk River, MN, Dean Anderson of Fairdale, Cynthia Schuler of Alexandria, MN and Lyndis Anderson (Marian Szatkowski) of Lawrenceville, GA. He is also survived by brother-in-law Melvin Amundson of Fordville, sister-in-law Beatrice Amundson of Hoople, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Alice, sisters, Wanda Wilhelmi, Doris Nelson, Erma Anderson, Hazel Ellertson, Jessie Liebersbach and Delores Hangsleben and great-grandson Michael Snelson. Funeral services will be Wednesday, October 20 at 11 a.m. at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church in Fairdale, ND. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Edinburg. Friends may also call at the Church on Wednesday one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the Silvesta Lutheran Cemetary, rural Fairdale.
