Kathleen S. "Kathy" Midgarden

Kathy Midgarden, beloved mother, nana, and great nana, passed away peacefully on October 18th, 2023, at the age of 81. Born on April 25, 1942, Kathy lived a life filled with love, creativity, and cherished family moments.

Kathy was a devoted mother to her three daughters, Tami, Tauna, and Jane. She poured her heart and soul into raising them, instilling in them the value of compassion, resilience, and a strong work ethic. Her love for her children knew no bounds, and she always ensured they felt supported and cherished.

As a Nana to eight grandchildren and a great nana to seven, Kathy found immense joy in watching her family grow and thrive. She loved being a part of their lives, attending school events, sports games, and family gatherings. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of her life, and she took every opportunity to shower them with love and affection.

Aside from her roles as a mother and nana, Kathy had a variety of hobbies that brought her immense joy. She had a talent for various clothing crafts, creating beautiful garments that showcased her creativity and attention to detail. Her oil paintings were breathtaking, capturing the beauty of nature and the depth of human emotions. Kathy also had a knack for jewelry making, crafting unique and stunning pieces that were treasured by those lucky enough to receive them.

In her free time, Kathy enjoyed curling, a sport that she excelled in and found great satisfaction in. It brought her closer to her community and provided her with a sense of camaraderie and friendship. However, her true passion was baking her famous “Nana” buns. Her family and friends eagerly anticipated the delicious aroma that filled her home whenever she prepared these delectable treats. Kathy’s buns brought people together, creating lasting memories and moments of pure joy.

Kathy’s life was forever changed when she married her high school sweetheart, Paul Midgarden, on April 16th, 1961. Their love was a shining example to all who knew them, and together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and shared dreams. Tragically Paul passed away on January 12th, 2001, leaving a void in Kathy’s heart that could never be filled. Yet, she carried on with grace and resilience, honoring his memory by living a life filled with love and joy. Kathy's memory is survived by daughters: Tami (David) Otto of Grand Forks, Tauna (Dean) O'Toole of Fargo, and Jane (Chris) Ranisate of Grand Forks and by her grandchildren; Alisabeth, Nicholas (Megan), and Olivia Otto, Eric (Melanie) and Emily O’Toole, and Kyle, Paul, and Zachary (Micaela) Ranisate and finally by her seven great grandchildren.

Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Paul Midgarden; brother, Larry Maier. Survived by sister, Judy Kulas; sister, Pam (Butch) Kirby; Jerry (Becky) Maier.

Visitation will be Monday October 23rd from 9:30 – 10:30 followed by the funeral service at First Lutheran Church, Hoople, ND.

Interment will be at Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Rural Hoople.

Memorial can be given to Hoople Community Center, Hoople, ND.
