Joseph Doran Olafson, age 85 of Edinburg, ND passed away on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at the VA Hospital of Fargo.
Doran Olafson was born February 19, 1933 in Gardar Township, North Dakota, the son of the late Johannes and Valgerdur (Walter) Olafson. He grew up and attended school there, graduating from Gardar High School. He served in the US Army from 1956-1958. Following his discharge he returned home. He was united in marriage to Donna Foseide on September 10, 1960 at the Odalen Lutheran Church of Edinburg. The couple lived in West Fargo and Mayville until returning to Edinburg in 1972. Doran farmed for a time and later worked for Stuart Loftsgard and Halls Potato Company until retiring. He also has delivered the Grand Forks Herald in Edinburg for the last 19 years.
He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Edinburg, the Edinburg American Legion Post #156 and the Icelandic Community Association of Mountain.
He is survived by his children: James Olafson, Edinburg, ND and Danette Ortiz, West Fargo, ND, 2 grandchildren, Siblings: Eugene Olafson, Jamestown, ND, Vera (Elroy) Brandvold, Edinburg, ND and Verna Severson, Colorado Springs, CO, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Donna in 2002 and brothers Ronald and Donald.
Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at 10:30 A.M. at the Trinity Lutheran Church of Edinburg. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-7 with a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Edinburg. Friends may also call at the church for one hour prior to the service. Military rites will be provided by the Edinburg American Legion Post #156 and the North Dakota National Guard Honor Guard. Inurnment will be at the Gardar Cemetery in the spring.
