John Leo Mondry

September 26, 1937 — November 18, 2018

John Leo Mondry, age 81 of Nevis, MN formerly of Ardoch, ND passed away after a heart attack, Sunday, November 18, 2018 at Sanford Health, Fargo, ND.
John was born on September 26, 1937, to Leo and Marian Mondry and grew up on a farm in Ardoch, ND, one of fourteen children. He graduated from St. James High School in Grand Forks in 1955. High school athletics were important in the Mondry family, and he was a four sport athlete in his youth. He excelled most in baseball and loved it best, collecting four infield hits in an American Legion State Championship game and telling his brother Jared with signature understatement that the game had gone “alright.” He also played for Mayville State University. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in business education, he was drafted by a minor league team but instead returned to farming in Ardoch, ND. There he managed the family farm with his brother Joel for several years. He met and married his wife Karen and continued to operate his own farm in the area before moving with Karen and his daughters Molly and Missy to Nevis, MN. There he again farmed with Joel at Bemidji Potato Company. Never willing to retire from farming, he worked seasonally for Schuster Farms of Warsaw, ND until his passing.
John was loved for his warmth, humility, and humor. No one had better stories than he did, and no one could tell them with as much wit or relish. He went out of his way for anyone who needed his help. He took care of his family and friends with constant thoughtfulness and generosity. John was an exceptionally devoted husband and father and a grandfather of nine grandchildren who amused, exasperated, and delighted him, and who all called him “Bunca.” He was preceded in death by his father Leo Mondry, mother Marian (Wosick) Mondry, sister Judy Mondry, brother Jim Mondry, sister Jill Mondry, and nephew Eric Mondry. He is survived by his wife Karen Mondry, his daughters, Molly (Jarod) Senger and Melissa (Silas) Pera, his grandchildren: Mary Therese Gray, Faustina Gray, Thomas Gust, Joe Senger, John Senger, Jude Senger, James Senger, Joachim Senger, and Augustine Pera, and his brothers and sisters: Joan (Lynn) Gilbertson, Jay (Judy) Mondry, Joel (Connie) Mondry, Jared Mondry, Joyce (Bill) Frison, Jane Mondry, June (Dave) Mazur, Judd Mondry, Jackie (Paul) Welle, and Jeff Mondry.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, November 24, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church of Warsaw.  Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church.  Interment will be at the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, Ardoch, ND.
