John E Fay

May 12, 1929 — April 26, 2014

John E. Fay was born May 12, 1929 in Bemidji, Minnesota, the son of the late Leslie and Christina (Wold) Fay. He grew up and attended school in Bemidji. He was united in marriage to Edith "Edie" Wright on December 8, 1950 in Carrington, ND. He served in the U.S. Army with the 29th Infantry Regiment where he drove Sherman Tanks in Okinawa, Japan. Following his discharge he returned to Carrington and began working for various area farmers. In 1965 the couple moved to Grafton, ND and he worked at the Developmental Center for several years. He later worked in law enforcement for 18 years in Grafton and Park River until retiring. After retiring, he worked several jobs including over 10 years as security for the Developmental Center. He was a member of the John Anderson American Legion Post #240 of Hoople, a life member of the Northeast North Dakota Pioneer Machinery Association and the NRA. He enjoyed deer hunting and one of the most important parts of his life was his work with horses. He is survived by his wife Edith "Edie" of Park River, ND, daughter Illa "Snookie" Bjorneby of rural Hoople, ND, grandchildren: Angela Amundson, Reynolds, ND, Amy (Aaron) Renelt, West Fargo, ND, Audrey (Wade) Beckman, Parker, CO, Alice (Warren) Kessler, Fargo, ND and William (Katie Adrian) Bjorneby, Hoople, ND, and 7 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Marie Warwas, Grand Rapids, MN, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law Roger Bjorneby, and brother-in-laws: William Wright, Wayne Warwas, and Toledo Sogn. Memorial services will be Friday, May 2, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. at the Zion Lutheran Church of rural Hoople. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Military rights will be provided by the John Anderson American Legion Post #240 and the North Dakota National Guard Honor Guard. Interment will be at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery of rural Hoople.
