He graduated from Edinburg High School in 1949 and from Concordia College in 1953. John was drafted into the United States Army in 1953 and served in Arkansas and Oklahoma. John was united in marriage to Eunice Haug on June 20, 1954 in Edinburg, ND. The couple lived at Fort Sill for one year. Following his discharge from the Army John taught school in Bemidji, MN and Gardar, ND. In 1959 the couple moved to Edinburg, ND. John taught science and served as principal. John enjoyed gardening, planting flowers and just being out in his yard. He was a big Bison Football fan and recorded all the games and watched them many times. He loved to follow his older grandsons in all their sporting events when they were in school and he didn’t miss many games. He looked forward to the Sunday visits from his younger grandsons in the last few years. John and Eunice spent part of 5 winters in Arizona but decided they were missing too much at home and quit. John was very involved with Edinburg community events. There weren’t too many events that he did not attend. He was on committees for Edinburg town, school and church reunions. One of his highlights was when Edinburg won the State Class B Boys Basketball tournament in 1988. He watched those games for many years. He enjoyed running into former students and visiting. When he was younger he enjoyed deer hunting and fishing. He and Eunice enjoyed going for evening drives, checking the crops and going to Dairy Queen. He loved visiting at the Table of Knowledge and he truly loved the town of Edinburg.

He is survived by his wife, Eunice of Park River, ND; son John T., Edinburg, ND; daughter, Janelle (Shane) Peterson, Langdon, ND; six grandchildren: Christopher (Kayla) Evenson, Michael (Caitlin) Evenson, Colton Evenson, Andrew (Morgan) Evenson, Ryland and Ramsey Peterson, great grandchildren: Claire, Anna Audrey and Eli; his special niece: Cindy (Scott) Geston, Fargo, ND.
