John D. "JD" Miller, Sr, of Minto, ND, passed away peacefully, on March 22, 2014, in the comfort of his home. JD was born July 13, 1930 to Floyd and Helen (Wellenger) Miller in Grafton, ND. He attended school in Forest River, ND and Grand Forks, ND, graduating from Central High School in Grand Forks in 1948. He began farming in 1948 until 1952, at which time he enlisted in the United States Army, served during the Korean Conflict, and was honorably discharged February, 1954. He returned to farming in the spring of 1954, and continued to farm in the Minto/Forest River area, until his retirement in 1993. He married Marlys Peterka September 1, 1956, at St. John's Catholic Church in Grafton, ND. He served on the Minto School Board, was a member of Minto American Legion Post 201, and was an active supporter of the St. Gianna Maternity Home in Warsaw, ND and Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Minto, ND. He enjoyed spending time with family, golfing with his friends, playing cards, attending Grandchildren's events, and spending winters in Arizona. He is survived by his wife, Marlys, daughters Connie (Dan) Syrup, Grand Forks, ND; Kelly (Brian) Schanilec, Forest River, ND; Mary (Brian) Schuster, Minto, ND; Katie (Gerard) Marino, Boston, MA; sons John (Dawn) Miller, Jr., Minto, ND; Anthony (Kimberly) Miller, Grand Forks, ND, and brother Jim (Dodie) Miller, Ontario, CA. as well as thirty-two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Helen, son Gregory "Guy" Miller, Grafton, ND, and sisters Joyce Elken, Long Beach, CA, and Helen Jean Quinn, Newport Beach, CA. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, March 28, 2014 at 11:30 A.M. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Minto. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-7 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at the church in Minto. Friends may also call at the church on Friday for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Minto, ND. Military rites will be provided by the Minto American Legion Post #201 and the North Dakota National Guard Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Sacred Heart Catholic Church Building or Cemetery Fund, in Minto, ND; St. Gianna Maternity Home in Warsaw, ND, and the Minto Quick Response Unit.
