Joel M. Fedje, age 95 of Hoople, ND passed away on Monday, December 1, 2008 at the Altru Hospital of Grand Forks.
Joel M. Fedje was born November 4, 1913 in Makoti, ND, the son of the late Andrew and Stena (Holum) Fedje. He grew up and attended school there. Joel moved to Hoople, ND in 1934 and started working for the Vanberg-Fedje Hardware Store on a part-time basis. In 1939 he started working fulltime. He served in the United States Army from 1941-1945 with the 164
th
Infantry. Following his discharge he returned to Hoople and continued working for the Hardware Store. He married Amy Torkelson on February 19, 1950 in Karlstad, MN. The couple lived in Grafton where he worked for Our Own Hardware and in 1955 they moved to Hoople. In 1967 they purchased the business and started Fedje Hardware in Hoople. Joel retired in 1983. Upon his retirement he took up golfing. In September of 2008 Joel moved to the Borg Home in Mountain, ND.
Joel was a member of the Hoople Lutheran Church.
He served on the church board, city council and was a member of the Hoople American Legion.
Joel is survived by his wife Amy; sons: Andrew Fedje, Fargo, ND; Richard (Janet) Fedje, Hoople, ND; and Robert (Robin) Fedje, Colstrip, MT.
He is also survived by seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Henry.
Funeral services will be Thursday, December 4, 2008 at 10:30 A.M. at the First Lutheran Church, Hoople, ND.
Visitation will be Wednesday, December 3, 2008 from 5-7 PM with at prayer service at 7:00 at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Grafton. Friends may also call at the church on Thursday for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the Hoople City Cemetery. Military rites will be provided by the Hoople American Legion Post.
