James F. Sommer age 83 of Park River, passed away Sunday, March 30, 2014 at the Altru Hospital of Grand Forks. James F. Sommer was born January 21, 1931 in O'Fallon, MO, the son of the late Felix and Mary Sommer. He attended grade school and high school in O'Fallon, MO. James then enlisted in the U.S. Army, being Honorably discharged in 1954. He then attended the Columbia University of Missouri. James worked various jobs in Missouri and then moved to Grand Forks where he attended the University of North Dakota. James was united in marriage to Mary Ann Greicar on June 25, 1966 in Pisek, ND. The couple lived in the Twin Cities, Hallock, MN, New Ulm, MN and Mason City, IA. After his retirement the couple moved to East Grand Forks, MN. In July 2013 they moved to Park River, where he resided at the Good Samaritan Center. James was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, East Grand Forks, MN, the Novotny-Kachena American Legion Post #208 and several Engineering organizations. James is survived by his wife Mary Ann, Park River, ND; sisters: Magdeline (Gordon) Carmichael, St. Joseph, MO; Martha LaBarge, Charles City, MO; brother, Vincent Sommer, Foristal, MO; sisters-in-law: Kathy (Lyle) Jelinek, Pisek, ND; Larry (Mary) Greicar, Grand Forks, ND; Marie Greicar, Pisek, ND; brother-in-law: Ed (Camille) Greicar, Fargo, ND. Several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother William, sister Tracy, brothers-in-law: Bob, Ben and Jean Greicer and sister-in-law, Kaye Sommer. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, April 4, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at the St. John Nepomuncene Catholic Church, Pisek. Friends may call at the church on Friday for one hour prior to the service. Military Rites will be provided by the Novotny-Kachena American Legion Post #208 and the North Dakota National Guard Honor Guard. Interment will be at the St. John's Catholic Cemetery.
