James L. Johnson, age 92, of Grafton, North Dakota, passed away Monday, March 9, 2026 at the Lutheran Sunset Home of Grafton. Jim was born in Grafton, the son of the late John, M. and Linne Johnson. He graduated from Grafton High School and joined his father in farming. Their farm had been homesteaded by his grandfather, Markus Johnson.
Jim always had an interest in Geology and Archeology. He had many books and publications on the subjects. When he had time after the harvest he would go to Montana and mine for precious gems, sapphires where his favorite. One Christmas, he gave the girls in his family beautiful sapphire rings. He mastered the art of cutting and polishing the beautiful gems.
Jim was also a very good cook. Never afraid to tackle a new recipe when sent one. Buffalo steaks were enjoyed often at his house.
Jim loved hunting out west and out of state. He also enjoyed some fishing trips. He did quite a bit of traveling to California, Texas, Montana and many trips to South Dakota, one of his favorite places.
During his years of farming, Jim and three other farmers built a large upscale potato house called the MRTJ and it is still in use.
Jim grew up with his three sisters, who adored him. He is survived by his sisters: Dolly of Forest Lake, MN and Jean (Carl) Peikert of Forest Lake, MN. Nieces: Linne, Mary, Terri and Kari; Nephews: Lorne, Carl Jr., and Johann and many great nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mabel Barr of Tyler, TX.
He will be honored with a memorial service at a later date.
