Jacob (Jake) Charles Hodny, 82, of Grafton, North Dakota died Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at his home in Grafton. Jake was born to Jacob and Mary (Urban) Hodny in Cleveland Township, Walsh County, North Dakota November 1, 1926. He was united in marriage to Marjorie M. Soukup, October 19, 1957 at St. Peter and Paul church, Bechyne, ND. They have three children, Marggy (Marlen) J. Quern, Alexandria, MN; Constance S. Hodny, Grand Forks, ND; Jacqueline (Bradley) Dolan and two grandchildren, Nicole and Jacob Dolan of Plymouth, MN. Jake grew up and attended school in Cleveland Township. He served with the US Army overseas, 1951-1953, Third Infantry Division, during the Korean Conflict. He returned from the army and worked with his brother on the family farm while he attended the Universtiy of North Dakota. He graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1957, with a B.A. degree from the College of Arts and Sciences. He continued on to law school and earned his Juris Doctorate degree in 1960. He was admitted to the North Dakota Bar Association in 1960 and practiced law in Grafton, ND until his retirement. He served as County Justice from 1961-1966. Jake was a member and former president of North East Judicial District Bar Association, and member of North Dakota and American Bar Association. He served on the North Dakota Association Board of Governors and disciplinary Board of North Dakota Supreme Court. Jake was a member of the St. John's Catholic Church, Grafton American Legion Post #41, Grafton V.F.W. Post #9367, Knight of Columbus #3918 and Kiwanis. He has three living siblings, Fred (Bertha) Hodny, Park River, ND; Mrs. Lillian (Vilas) Heinrich, Schofeild, WI; and Tony (Florence) Hodny, Fargo, ND, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and two sisters. Jake enjoyed reading, traveling, visiting with friends, and spending time with his family. He had a unique understanding and respect for the legal justice system. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, May 2, 2009 at 10:30 A.M. at the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church of Grafton. Visitation will be Friday from 5-7 with a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. and again on Saturday for one hour prior to the service all at St. John's Church. Interment will be at the St. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery, Bechyne, ND. Military rites will be provided by the Grafton American Legion Post.
