Helene E. Morstad

Helene E. "Candy" Morstad, age 76 of Grafton, passed away Monday, September 29, 2014 at her home in Grafton. Helene Emily "Candy" Lykken was born June 30, 1938, the daughter of the late Handy and Esther (Nelson) Lykken. She was born in a 1938 Plymouth car on the way to the hospital in Grafton, due to a flat tire. She graduated from Adams High School on May 23, 1956. She attended Aaker's Business College and graduated from there on August 6, 1957. She was united in marriage to Wayne Morstad on September 30, 1961 at Hitterdahl Lutheran Church, rural Adams. The couple made their home on a farm near Fordville, where they raised their family. She worked for the Developmental Center, worked as a bookkeeper at the drugstore, and cleaned homes. Candy moved to Grafton in 1985 where she made her home until the time of her death. She enjoyed visiting with friends and family, and especially enjoyed writing letters and receiving letters from her grandchildren. She was always interested in what activities they were doing. She liked to go to Randy's farm and ride with him in the combine during the harvest season. She also enjoyed curling for many years and was on a team with Joyce, Jeanie and Dorothy that took the state championship in 1971. Candy felt very strongly about having her body donated to science and has donated her body to the University of North Dakota. She was a member of the Fordville Lutheran Church. Candy is survived by her children: Helen (Jon) Elden, Grand Forks, ND; Randy (Wanda) Morstad, Fordville, ND; grandchildren: Bethany, Levi and Madison Elden, all of Grand Forks, ND; sisters: LaVonne (Donald) Hylden, Park River, ND; Betty Webb, Fargo, ND; Trudy Wippler, Lankin, ND; Lucille Bleakley, Denver, CO. Many nieces and nephews also survive. She is preceded in death by her parents and husband Wayne. Memorial services will be Friday, October 3, 2014 at 10:30 A.M. at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Grafton. Friends may come and visit with the family for one hour prior to the service on Friday.
