Hazel G. Summers, age 92 of Park River, ND and formerly Grafton, ND passed away on Tuesday, July 7, 2026 at the Good Samaritan Society of Park River.
Hazel G. Swenson was born on a blustery winter day, March 28, 1934 in rural Park River, ND to the late Lewis and Annie (Hanson) Swenson. She was raised in Park River and attended Park River grade school, followed by the Walsh County Agriculture School. She graduated with the class of 1952.
After graduation, Hazel worked for the National Circulating Company. They traveled all over the United States, where she got to see wonderful places and meet so many nice people. While working for this company, she met her husband James and they were married January 23, 1958. Blessing their marriage were four children, Timothy, Karen, Colleen, and James.
After James’ passing in 1982, Hazel began working for the State Developmental Center, were she worked for 26 years. She enjoyed her job in the medically fragile unit, where she found each day rewarding. Hazel was a Girl Scout leader for 14 years. She was honored multiple times by het Edith Macy Conference Center for her incredible contribution to the Grafton area Girl Scouting programs. Hazel was a long-time member of the Church of the Nazarene and served as Superintendent of Sunday School for many years. In her retirement, she loved volunteering at Lutheran Sunset Home, visiting with residents and the friends she made at Villa DeRemer.
Hazel is survived by her children: Karen Summers, Grafton, ND, Colleen Summers, Vancouver, WA, and James (Susan) Summers, Grafton, ND; grandson Zachary Summers; her siblings: Lorraine Holmquist, Minneapolis, MN, Lloyd Swenson, Alaska, Lorna (Charles) Henry, Fordville, ND; sister-in-law Marlene Swenson; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her infant son Timothy, and siblings: Harold and Allen.
Funeral services will be on Saturday, July 11, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at the Grafton Assembly of God Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery of Park River, ND.
