Harriet M. Omlie, age 90 of Grand Forks, ND and formerly of Lankin, ND passed away on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at Woodside Village in Grand Forks.
Harriet M. Kratochvil was born February 22, 1928 on the family farm near Lankin, ND where she lived for 80 years. She was the daughter of the late Emil and Nellie (Bosh) Kratochvil. Harriet graduated from Lankin High School. Harriet was married to the love of her life, Ervin Omlie on November 4, 1947 in Lankin, ND. The couple lived and farmed the family farm near Lankin. Harriet worked side by side with Ervin on the farm. Her duties often included hauling grain, making hay, hauling hay, milking cows and picking rock. They were awarded the Walsh County Conservation Award in 1974. Harriet worked at the Lankin Cenex C-Store for 9 years and loved all of her customers. Ervin passed away on July 11, 1987. Harriet continued to live on the farm until 2007 when she moved to Grand Forks.
Harriet was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and Altar Society where she held many offices. She was a life member of the Lankin American Legion Auxiliary and a member of the Lankin Senior Citizens. Harriet and Ervin were avid sports fans. They were most proud of the grandchildren’s sporting events and activities. They were awarded the “Best Sports Fans” of 1973. She was very proud of her Czech heritage and loved to play and listen to the old time music. She was very civic minded and served on the Federal Grand Jury. Harriet loved oil painting, sewing quilts, playing cards, playing the piano and organ and trips to the casino. Harriet was known for her great fashion, which included lots of bling! She was most compassionate about her Minnesota Timberwolves. Anyone that knew her appreciated her quick wit and great sense of humor.
Harriet is survived by her children: Karen (Charles) Hodny, Susan (Curt) Heazlett, both of Grand Forks, ND; Ken Omlie, Lankin, ND; LaRae (Larry) Close, West Fargo, ND; her 11 grandchildren: Kent (Jennifer) Hodny, Kurt (Cheri) Hodny, Brandon (Aimee) Hodny, Nathan (Kristen) Heazlett, Hovi (Mike) Straus, Katie (Justin) Carl, Keith (Tracy) Omlie, Kyle (Terra Wiese) Omlie, Kane (Nichole) Omlie, Mackenzie (Trevor) Odden and Nick Close; 14 great grandchildren: Nicole, Jacob, Michael, & Matthew Hodny, Stellan Heazlett, Asher & Alex Straus, Bennett Carl, Jordan, Jessen, Kendrix & Harrison Omlie, Liv & Harper Odden; her sisters: Georgia Matejcek, Devils Lake, ND; and Pat (Tom) Hills, Moorhead, MN; her sister-in-law, Irene Nicholas, Portland, OR. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter-in-law, Debbie Omlie; sister, Loretta McLaughlin; sister-in-law, Viola Vorachek; brothers-in-law: Harold McLaughlin, Roland Matejcek, Norman, Harry and Lloyd Omlie and infant sister, Marion.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at 2:00 PM at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Lankin, ND. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-7 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM and on Wednesday for one hour prior to the service all at St. Joseph’s Catholic church of Lankin, ND. Interment will be at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Lankin, ND in the spring.
