Harold O. Hanevold

December 14, 1924 — April 26, 2018

Harold O. Hanevold, age 93 of Grand Forks, ND, formerly of Grafton and Larimore, ND passed away Thursday, April 26, 2018 at the Valley Eldercare Center of Grand Forks.

Harold O. Hanevold was born December 14, 1924 in Donaldson, MN, the son of the late Ole and Ethel (Davis) Hanevold. He attended school at the Rural Schools of Kittson County, MN. Harold served in the United States Army during World War II from April of 1943 to February of 1946 serving in Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. Following his discharge he returned home. He married Florence Woinarowicz on November 16, 1948 in Stephen, MN.  Together, they raised 11 children. He attended the Hanson Mechanical Trade School in Fargo. They then moved to Grafton where he worked as a machinist for Wilson Brothers Co. In 1978 the couple moved to Larimore, ND. For several years he worked as a machinist at the Grand Forks Air Force Base 842nd Vehicle Maintenance Squadron. Upon semi-retirement in 1990, he enjoyed winters in Yuma, AZ and worked for American Crystal Sugar in the fall, and Pribb’s Steel and American Industries in the summer months. Florence passed away on December 19, 1983. He married Marilyn Hickman on November 2, 1990; she passed away on April 16, 2012.

Harold was a 50 year member of the American Legion, with the Manvel Post being his most recent. He was honored to have traveled to Washington DC on the Honor Flight in 2009.

Harold is survived by his children: Janet Nelson, Apple Valley, MN; Randy Hanevold, Bemidji, MN; Gail Hanevold (Tom Woodside), Bloomington, MN; Clarice (Alan) Cline, Surprise, AZ; Lenore (Daniel) Pietruszewski, Stephen, MN; Morna (Roger) Gorder, Grafton, ND; Sharon Hanevold, Elk River, MN; Leslie (Mark) Wiegandt, Larimore, ND; Grant (Jennifer) Hanevold, Logandale, NV; daughter-in-law, Kindra Hanevold, Thompson, ND; 29 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Harold was loved and cared for by the Valley Eldercare staff, who were a valued part of his extended family. Harold was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Florence, and wife Marilyn, sons: Arlan and Orin, grandson Theodore Brett Larson, brother Marvin, and sister Adeline Johnson.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at 10:30 A.M. at  St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church of Grafton. Visitation will be Monday, April 30th, from 5-7:00 P.M. with a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. at the church. Friends may call at the church on Tuesday for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery. Military Rites will be provided by the Manvel American Legion Post and the North Dakota National Guard Honor Guard.
