Harlan C. Lien

Harlan C. Lien, age 74 of Grafton, ND and formerly of Grand Junction, CO and Fordville, ND passed away on Friday, June 2, 2017 at the Lutheran Sunset Home of Grafton.

Harlan Curtis Lien was born January 16, 1943 in Fordville, ND the son of the late Hjalmer and Gladyce (Monson) Lien. He was baptized and confirmed at the Fordville Lutheran Church. He graduated from Fordville High School in 1961 as Salutatorian. He graduated from UND with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. While in college he served with the Air Force ROTC. In 1966 Harlan enlisted in the United States Air Force and served until 1970, serving one year in Vietnam. Upon his discharge he started working in the Business and Finance office at Edward’s Air Force Base. He later transferred to Lowry Air Force Base in Denver and retired from there in 1994. He moved to Grand Junction, CO and lived there until March of 2017 when he moved to the Lutheran Sunset Home in Grafton, ND.

Harlan was a member of the American Lutheran Church of Grand Junction, CO. He enjoyed jogging, gardening, reading, watching movies, drinking coffee with his buddies and walking his dogs. After his diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease he walked three miles every day with his walker.

Harlan is survived by his sisters: Gloria Gustafson, Minneapolis, MN and Karen (Howard) Ray, Grafton, ND; five nieces and nephews, 13 great nieces and nephews, three aunts and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and good friend, Aaron Swartz.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at 1:00 P.M. at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Grafton. Visitation will be Tuesday for one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be at Oak Grove Cemetery, Fordville, ND. Military rites will be provided by the Grafton American Legion and the United States Air Force Honor Guard. Memorials are preferred to the Lutheran Sunset Home or Altru Hospice-Grafton Division.
