George J. Chyle, age 92, of Fargo, ND, formerly of Pisek, ND, passed away Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at the Meritcare Palliative Care Unit in Fargo.
George was born February 25, 1916, to John A. and Elizabeth (Novak) Chyle. He was raised on a farm west of Pisek, ND. He attended the Willow Grove country School and graduated from Pisek High School in 1935. After graduating from high school he worked briefly at the railroad depot in Pisek. George soon took the postal exam and started working as a rural mail carrier in the Pisek area, using horse and sleigh, his Oliver tractor and jeep during the winter to carry the mail.
George J. Chyle and Marianna Novotny were married on August 21, 1941 in Pisek.
They resided in Pisek until moving to Fargo in October 2002.
In 1942 George entered the United States Army and served for the duration of World War II in the 6
th
Infantry division.
He fought in the Pacific Theater making landings in New Guinea and the Philippines. Following his return from duty George resumed his rural mail carrier career in Pisek, ND, and for a short time in both Cavalier and Fordville, ND, culminating in his retirement in 1979 after 42 years of service. He also farmed west of Pisek for many years. He enjoyed helping people by furnishing rides and favors for those in need.
George was passionately civic minded and involved in many groups and organizations throughout his adult life.
He was a lifelong active member of the Novotny-Kachena American Legion Post 208 and held many various local positions as well as 2
nd
district Commander. Some of the many other organizations and positions he held were: St. John's Church board and Cemetery Board; KD Lodge president; member of 40 et 8; Pisek School treasurer; Pisek City auditor; Walsh Water Users board of directors; St. Ansgar's Hospital board advisor; Park River Good Samaritan Advisory Board; Pisek Senior Citizen's president; chairman of the Walsh County Senior Citizen's council; and chairman of the Walsh County Nutrition Committee. George was also a member of the Silver Haired Legislature and loved to talk about current events and debate politics. He was an avid baseball fan of his beloved St. Louis Cardinals and followed the Twins and other favorite teams from spring training to the World Series. For many years George coached youth baseball including the Pisek American Legion baseball team. He was a member of the Valley Czech Singers and also used to sing in the church choir.
George is survived by his eight children, seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
His children are Camille (Eddie) Greicar, Fargo, ND, Greg (Bonnie) Chyle, Park River, ND, Emily Beth Zientara, Fargo, ND, Faith (Jorgen) Knutson, Rolette, ND, Joseph Chyle, Pisek, ND, Maryann Bender, Bellevue, NE, Geralyn Chyle, Pisek, ND, and Sonya Chyle, Moreno Valley, CA; grandchildren Lonnie (Ruth) Greicar, Farmington, MN, Diane (Chyle) Suttles, Swartz Creek, MI, Mariah (Knutson)(Russ) Conner, Bismarck, ND, Vanessa and Micala Knutson, Rolette, ND, and Jonathan and Emma Bender, Bellevue, NE; great grandchildren McKenzi, Madison and Trenton Conner, and Cody Chyle; sisters Edythe Foerster, Lockhart, TX and Mayme Lovotti, Vancouver, WA. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Marianna (2006); his parents John A.(1962) and Elizabeth (1956) Chyle; brother John R. (1989) and sister Angeline (1982), Lewis; two infant sons: Aemilian (1942) and George Jr. (1946), grandson Christian (2006) Chyle and son-in-law Wayne (1996) Zientara.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, May 10, 2008 at 10:00 A.M. at the St. John's Catholic Church in Pisek, ND.
Visitation will be Friday from 5-7 PM with a Rosary service at 7:00 PM and on Saturday for one hour prior to the service all at the church. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Military rites will be provided by the Novotny-Kachena American Legion Post #208, Pisek, ND.
The Tollefson Funeral Home of Park River is in charge of the arrangements.
