Genevieve M. Barta

Genevieve M. Barta, age 89 of Minto, ND passed away on Thursday, March 26, 2015 at Altru Hospital of Grand Forks. Genevieve M. Schanilec was born May 27, 1925 in Grafton, ND the daughter of the late Herman C. and Emma (Votava) Schanilec. She attended school in Grafton and graduated from Grafton High School. Genevieve was united in marriage to Leonard Barta on June 10, 1946 in Veseleyville, ND. The couple lived and farmed near Forest River, ND until 1970 when they moved into Minto. Gen worked as a sales associate at the J.C. Penny store in Grafton until the store closed in 1986. Leonard passed away on October 15, 1998. She moved to the Good Samaritan Center in East Grand Forks, MN in 2008, later moving to Parkwood Place in Grand Forks and in 2013 moved to Woodside Village in Grand Forks. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Altar Society of Minto, the Minto American Legion Auxiliary, Minto Benefit Bridge Club and past president of the Minto Senior Citizens. She enjoyed crocheting and sewing. Genevieve is survived by her children: Susan (John) Gudajtes, Minto, ND; Adrienne (Brad) Narloch, Minto, ND; Renae (Alan) Bye, Grand Forks, ND; Greg (Janelle) Barta, Grand Forks, ND; Kathy (Bill) Slominski, Anthem, AZ; Gary (Diana) Barta, Fargo, ND; Vern (Kathy) Barta, Hillsboro, ND; 24 grandchildren, five step grandchildren, 57 great grandchildren, siblings: Herman L. (Evelyn) Schanilec, Portland, OR; Ernest Schanilec, Vergas, MN, Vern (Faye) Schanilec, Washougal, WA; Connie (Jack) McDonald, Bismarck, ND; and sister-in-law, Irene Schanilec, Forest River, ND. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, Cindy and brother Eugene Schanilec. Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at 10:30 A.M. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Minto. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-7 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Sacred Heart Catholic. Friends may also call at the church on Wednesday for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in the spring.
