Fred B. Holm

Fred Holm, age 86 of rural Hoople, ND, passed away Friday, January 3, 2014 at the First Care Health Center of Park River. Fred was born on October 1, 1927, in Edinburg, ND to Ole and Matilda "Tillie" (Halvorson) Holm. He completed his education in the Dundee Township District 35 School in the rural Edinburg and Hoople area. Fred served in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1952 completing active duty in Korea during the Korean War. Following his military service, he returned to North Dakota to the family Holm Brothers Farm where he worked with his brothers, Raymond and Joseph. On June 12, 1960, Fred married Gudrun Finnson at Vikur Lutheran Church in Mountain, ND. Gudrun passed away after 47 years of marriage on November 18, 2007. Fred was a member of the Hvideso Lutheran Church, rural Hoople, ND, and served on the Board of Directors for many years. After the church closed, he became a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Edinburg, ND. Fred was a member of the Dundee School Board. He was also a member, for over 60 years, of the American Legion Post 156 in Edinburg, ND. Fred was passionate about working on the farm and supporting his community. He also enjoyed traveling to see his grandchildren as they were growing up, participating in their activities and attending many special events over the years. During this past year, Fred attended his youngest grandson's high school graduation and shared the Thanksgiving holiday with Loretta and her family. Fred is survived by his daughter: Loretta (David) Schmidt of Littleton, CO; grandchildren: Andrea, Michael, and Daniel Schmidt; brother: Joseph (Mae) Holm, rural Hoople, ND. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Preceding him in death were his parents; wife Gudrun; sister Bernice Field; brothers: Gilman, Raymond, and Leonard Holm. Funeral services will be Friday, January 10, 2014 at 2:30 PM at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Edinburg. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-7:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at the Trinity Lutheran Church. Friends may also call at the church on Friday for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Military Rites will be provided by the Davidson American Legion Post 156 and the North Dakota National Guard Honor Guard.
