Frances Lorraine (Haun) Schulz

December 10, 1920 — March 21, 2016

Frances Lorraine (Haun) Schulz, 95, passed away March 21, 2016 in Littleton, Colorado.

Lorraine, as she was known to her many St. Thomas, North Dakota and Escondido, California friends, was born December 10, 1920 in Southern Illinois to Thomas and Mary Etta Burnette.

On July 26, 1940, Lorraine married John E. Haun in Coulterville, Illinois. John and Lorraine had five children, Mary (Tom) Lee, The Villages, Florida; John Michael (Linda Carlson, deceased) Haun, San Carlos, California; William E. (Marsha) Haun, M.D., Denver, Colorado; Thomas Haun, Escondido, California; and Melinda Haun (Jim) Hohncke, Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin.

Lorraine is survived by her children and four granddaughters, Stephanie (Pierre) Germain, Paris, France; Kristin Haun, D.D.S, Denver, Colorado; Kelley Haun, Atty. at Law, Denver, Colorado; Kelzey Haun, Gunnison, Colorado; and three great grandchildren, Alexander, Olivier and Elsa Germain. She is also survived by her former daughter-in-law and dear friend, Gail Haun, mother of Kristin, Kelley and Kelzey.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her two sisters, Ruby and Pauline, her brother Claude, her first husband, John E. Haun, and her late husband, Goltz Schulz.

John and Lorraine moved to St. Thomas in 1948, where John was Superintendent of the St. Thomas Public Schools and Crystal Public Schools and later, owner of Haun Insurance Agency. John passed away on November 13, 1967. Following John Haun’s death, Lorraine attended the University of North Dakota and finished her undergraduate degree in education and went on to complete her Master’s Degree in Education, also at the University of North Dakota. Lorraine taught middle school math and later, 4th grade, in Crystal. In 1978 she married Goltz Schulz of St. Thomas. Goltz was the father of two children, the late Melford C. (Wilma) Schulz of Great Falls, Montana and Linda (Bruce) Smith of Mankato, Minnesota. Goltz Schulz passed away in 1984 and Lorraine moved to Escondido, California where she lived for more than 30 years near her life-long family friend, Marjorie Lysengen, also originally from St. Thomas.

In January of 2015, Lorraine moved to Denver, Colorado, to be near her son Bill and his family.

Lorraine was truly a remarkable wife and mother. She was especially proud of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and all of their accomplishments. She loved playing cards for money with her granddaughters.   Her enduring smile was always present until shortly before her death. Additionally, she enjoyed traveling, especially when it involved visiting or spending time with her family.

She was an active member of the St. Thomas United Methodist Church and the First United Methodist Church of Escondido in Escondido, California. She was a member of the Lyceum Club, United Methodist Women (UMW), Order of the Eastern Star, American Association of University Women and many other social groups. Lorraine was a great Bridge card player all of her life, even into her later years, and also enjoyed golf and Mahjong.

Lorraine lived a very long, full life and will always be lovingly remembered by her family and friends.

The family would like to express their appreciation to those family members who lovingly and attentively cared for Lorraine in her later years and to those who visited Lorraine at her home in Escondido through the First United Methodist Church of Escondido Congregational Care Ministry. She especially looked forward to visits from special Care Ministry friend, Jane.

A private family service will be held in Denver, Colorado. The family prefers memorials be sent to the St. Thomas United Methodist Church, St. Thomas, ND 58276 or the First United Methodist Church of Escondido, 341 S. Kalmia St. Escondido, CA 92025.
