Erma Such

Erma Such, age 100 of Hallock, MN passed away on Monday, February 21, 2011at the Kittson Memorial Nursing Home of Hallock. Erma Dean Macel Gorsuch was born April 23, 1910 in Ray, Illinois the daughter of the late John F. and Ruth I. (Cooper) Gorsuch. She moved to Warren, MN with her parents at the age of five. She attended schools in Auburn, ND and Leyden, ND. Following her education she worked for several families in their homes and later worked in the cook car for the threshing crews during harvest. Erma was united in marriage to Barney Such on January 10, 1927 in Cavalier, ND. The couple lived near St. Thomas, ND where Barney farmed for Oscar Koppang. In 1940 the couple purchased a farm near Hallock, MN and moved the family there. Barney died in 1942. Erma continued to live on the farm and in later years did babysitting for area families. In 2003 she moved to Tufte Manor in Grand Forks and in 2010 she moved to the Kittson Memorial Nursing Home in Hallock. She was a member of the Hallock Evangelical Mission Covenant Church. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and gardening. Erma also did a lot of canning and freezing of her garden produce which she shared with everybody. She is survived by her children: Bernice (Ted) Carlson, Longmont, CO; Helen Torgerson, Fergus Falls, MN; Melvin (Helen Ann) Such, Hallock, MN; Elsie (Ludvig) Egstad, Grand Forks, ND; Donald (Alice) Such, Fargo, ND; Raymond (Trudy) Such, Fargo, ND; Robert (Sharon) Such, Barnesville, MN; 32 grandchildren, 62 great grandchildren and 19 great great grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers: Keith, William, Russell and John and sister Alvina. Funeral services will be Saturday, February 26, 2011 at 2:00 PM at the Grace Lutheran Church of Hallock, MN. Visitation will be Friday from 5-7 PM with a prayer service at 6:30 PM at the Austin-Hughes Funeral Home of Hallock, MN. Friends may also call at the church on Saturday for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the Greenwood Cemetery in Hallock, MN.
