Eloise M Holmes

Eloise M. Holmes, age 102 of Grand Forks, ND and formerly of Adams, ND passed away on Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at the Altru Hospital of Grand Forks, ND.

Eloise M. Zumwinkle was born February 9, 1916 in Beaver Falls, MN daughter of the late Edward and Ida (Samuelson) Zumwinkle. In 1929 the family moved to Adams, ND and she graduated from Adams High School in 1933.  On July 24, 1933 Eloise was joined in marriage to Wendell Holmes, and had six children. They lived and farmed north of Adams. In 1949 they moved to Grand Forks. Eloise worked at the Dacotah Hotel in Grand Forks from 1945-1975. In 1978, they moved back to Adams. Wendell passed away in 1988 and she moved back to Grand Forks and started working at Whitey’s Café.

Eloise was a member of the Mountain Lutheran Church of Adams. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting and oil painting, Eloise was a mother and care giver above all else and she was very proud of her six children.  She took particular delight in her grandchildren and great grandchildren and looked forward to spending time with them. She also appreciated how friendly and helpful everyone was to her at Cherrywood Village. No matter where she lived, Eloise’s heart was always in the Adams area. She got to visit there one last time on Sept. 20, 2018.

Eloise is survived by her daughters: Beverly Bowen and Gayle Karger, 15 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren; her sister, Edna Espinosa, Seattle, WA. Several nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, children: Joyce, Donn, Dell and David.

Funeral services will be Saturday, October 6, 2018 at 11:00 AM at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Park River, ND. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be at Odalen Lutheran Cemetery, rural Edinburg, ND.
