Ellen Kay Hurtt, age 82, passed away Sunday, July 19, 2020 at the Park River Good Samaritan Center surrounded by her family.
Ellen was born May 12, 1938, in Grafton, ND, the daughter of Andrew and Agnes (Grovum) Novak. She graduated from WCAS in Park River in 1956 and attended Mayville State College; she went on to teach at the Kensington School near Park River for one year. On July 29, 1955, she met her lifelong sweetheart, George, and they were united in marriage on June 22, 1957, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Park River. She was a member of the Park Center Lutheran Church, active in Ladies Aid, and taught Sunday School for many years. She volunteered at the Good Samaritan Center by giving devotions.
Ellen had a strong faith in God and instilled it in her family. She was an excellent cook, known for her homemade buns and apple pie. She loved singing hymns, gardening, listening to country music and attending her grandchildren’s sporting events. She never turned down a game of HORSE or softball “500.” George and Ellen enjoyed several winters in Arizona and became avid fans of the Phoenix Suns.
Ellen was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and will be dearly missed by her husband George; her son, Tim (Naomi) of Hoople; daughters, Sandy, of Hoople and Mary (Ward) Eagleson of Grand Forks; her grandchildren: David (Kierstin) Hurtt, Kirsten (Josh) Lien, Philip (Megan) Hurtt, Wyatt and Will Eagleson, and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Janice (Larry) Klindtworth of Arlington, WA. Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Norman, and sister, Arlene Hylden.
The family extends their gratitude to the staff at Good Samaritan Center in Park River for their compassionate care.
