Duane L Gustafson

Duane L. Gustafson, age 90 of Park River, ND, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2023. He is preceded in death by his brothers Curtis Gustafson and Neil Gustafson, his sister Emmy (Gustafson) Hinderaker, as well as his niece Susan (Hinderaker) Wolter.

Duane was born March 1, 1933, in rural Adams, ND. He was the youngest child of Melvin and Lily Gustafson and grew up on their farmstead in Vesta Township, Walsh County. He attended grade school at the rural school in Vesta Township, and he completed high school at the Walsh County Ag School in Park River. Thereafter he graduated from North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND.

Duane served two years in the United States Navy as a radioman on a PS Martin Marlin Seaplane attached to Patrol Squadron 48. He worked for Fesserman Co-Op Association, Wilson Meat Company, and retired from the United States Department of Agriculture Farm Home Administration.

After retirement, Duane lived in Park River, for many years with his brother Curtis. He often spent winters traveling with his dog Chuck to California and/or Arizona in his RV Camper. In 2019 he moved to the Sunrise Estates Apartments of the Good Samaritan Society, moving to Good Samaritan’s Skilled Care Facility in August 2023.

Duane is survived by his nephews Allen Hinderaker, Dale Hinderaker, Robert Gustafson, Janet (Gustafson) Robinson, and David Gustafson.

Funeral services will be at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 129 Harris Ave. So., Park River, at 10:00 a.m. October 24, 2023. Burial will be in the St. Peter Cemetery of rural Adams, ND.  Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church.  Military rites will be provided by the Park River American Legion Post #147 and he US Naval Honor Guard.
