Douglas W. Sevigny

Douglas Sevigny, age 64, of Fort Totten, ND, passed away on December 6, 2023, at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND. Douglas Wayne Sevigny was born on June 6, 1959, in Devils Lake, ND, and was lovingly adopted by his parents, Wilfrid and Marcella (Byzewski) Sevigny.

Growing up in Grafton, ND, he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and assisted his parents in managing the Grafton Appliance Center. He graduated from Grafton High School and pursued higher education at Mayville State College, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration. Subsequently, he attended Haskell Indian Junior College, the University of Wisconsin (HUD), the Smithsonian Institution (Office of Museum Programs), and the USDA Graduate School (IHS).

Douglas relocated to Fort Totten and became a valued member of the Spirit Lake Tribe. Over the years, he held various roles within the Tribe, including Economic Development Planner, CDBG Administrator, BIA Credit Officer, Grant Writer and Administrator, Tribal Children Services Coordinator, IHS Clinic Administrative Officer, Boys and Girls Club of America Director, Benson County Project Coordinator, Office of the Special Trustee for American Indians Accounting Technician, IHS Clinic Budget Analyst, Wodakota Traditional Court Director, and Spirit Lake Tourism Director.

He was an active member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Grafton, ND, and found joy in pursuits such as astronomy, hunting, fishing, woodwork refinishing, piano, and music.

Douglas is survived by his foster brother-in-law, Tony Weigel of Edgeley, ND; aunts, Marie Biba of Milwaukee, WI, Barbara Byzewski of Greenfield, WI, Joan Byzewski of Bradenton, FL, and Shirley Suda of Grafton, ND; foster nieces and nephews, Lisa (Cory) Zachrison of Jamestown, ND, Joseph (Katrina) Weigel of Edgeley, ND, Lynda (Derek) Carlson of Jamestown, ND, and Jason Weigel of Edgeley, ND; along with many cousins.

Douglas was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Timothy Sevigny, and foster sister Irene Weigel, as well as his maternal grandparents, Julian and Cazmera Byzewski, and paternal grandparents, Simeon and Clara Sevigny.

Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday, December 14, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church of Grafton, ND. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.  Interment will be at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery of Grafton.
