Dorothy D. Ferguson, age 73 of Park River passed away on Saturday, January 24, 2009 at First Care Health Center in Park River, ND.
Dorothy D. Thompson was born July 4, 1935, in Isanti County, MN
the daughter of Floyd and Floretta (Day) Thompson.
She was the seventh of eighteen children. She
attended Jackson School near Bruno, MN until moving to Minneapolis, MN at the age of 16 to be a nanny for Leonard and Jane Dayton.
She graduated from Minnetonka High School in 1954 and took a position as a bank teller until moving to Park River, ND in December 1955. She married John A.
Ferguson on December 18, 1955 in Deephaven, MN.
They made their home on the farmstead east
of Park River.
She enjoyed spending time with family, painting, bird watching, traveling, reading,
fishing, puzzles, word finds and gardening.
John and Dorothy moved to Devils Lake in the mid-
80's to attend Lake Region Community College.
She graduated with a degree in Child Development.
While at Lake Region they worked as resident managers in student housing.
She also worked at
Friendship, Inc. and Prairie Rose Thrift Shop in Grafton, ND.
Among her many activities:
Watkins dealer for 21 years, the Auxiliaries of Red River Valley Potato Association, North Dakota Potato Growers, National Potato Council, Sons of Norway member and past officer, Paul Farup Post #147, American Legion Auxiliary member and past officer, Bird Watcher's Society of Devils Lake, Walsh Women's Curling Club member.
She was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church and Park Center Ladies Aid.
She is survived by daughter:
Dawn (Larry) Ellingson of Parker, CO; sons: Kevin (Kathy) of Park
River, ND; Jeffrey of Los Angeles, CA; Jim (Barb) of Park River, ND.
Grandchildren: Shawn
Ferguson of Washington, DC; Justin (Tanya) Ferguson of Warroad, MN; Vanessa Ellingson of Loveland, CO; Nick Ellingson of Highlands Ranch, CO; Riley Ferguson and Kyle Ferguson of Park River, ND. Great grandchildren:
Ethan and Taylor Ferguson of Warroad, MN; Easton Gardiner and Layla Ellingson
of Highlands Ranch, CO. Brothers: Eldon (Margaret) Thompson; Clifton (Carol) Thompson; Richard (Isabelle) Thompson; Jerry (Judy) Thompson, Dale Thompson; Wayne Thompson; and Bill Thompson. Sisters:
Ann (Don) Bacon; Vera (Bob) Charbonneau; Shirley (Dick) Carroll; Margie (Marvin) Laaveg;
Jennie (Dennis) Anderson; Norma (Mike) O'Gary; Linda (John) Karlson; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband John on December 31, 1994 and son: Jon David on August 11, 1983; sister: Juanita Myhre; brothers: Arnold and Milton Thompson.
Funeral services will be Thursday, January 29, 2009 at 10:00 A.M. at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church of Park River.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 6-8 P.M. with a prayer service at 8:00 P.M. at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Park River. Friends may also call at the church on Thursday for one hour p
rior to the service.
Interment will be at the Memorial Park Cemetery of Park River, ND.
The Tollefson Funeral Home of Park River is in charge of the arrangements.
