Doris M. Altendorf, age 97 of Minto, North Dakota, passed away Tuesday, February 24, 2026 at the Lutheran Sunset Home of Grafton, ND.
Doris was born May 19, 1928 in Grafton, North Dakota, the daughter of the late Almond and Diana (Primeau) Collette. She attended school and graduated from St. Aloysius Academy, Oakwood, North Dakota. Doris was united in marriage to Elmer Altendorf in July 1946 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oakwood, ND. The couple made their home in Acton Township where Elmer and Doris began farming and raising a family. In 1963 she was united in marriage to Melvin Benson and they lived in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. Melvin passed away in 1979. Doris remarried Elmer F. Altendorf in March 2008. They resided in their home in Minto, ND and enjoyed traveling until Doris moved to the Lutheran Sunset Home in 2013.
She was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Altar Society in Minto, ND. Doris enjoyed painting, gardening, building garden beds, creating many homemade crafts, and attending craft shows. She retired from her career as a clothing clerk at JCPenney, where she received numerous awards for her dedication and service.
Doris is survived by her children: Marvin (Sherrie) Altendorf, Minto, ND; Janice Altendorf, Minto, ND; Kevin (Modesta) Benson, Bellingham, WA; Donna (Lee) Myogeto, Detroit Lakes, MN; daughter-in-law Charleen Altendorf, Minto, ND; 21 grandchildren and several great and great-great grandchildren. Siblings: Iris (Curt) Holten of Kelso, WA, Diane (Bill) Hanson of Longmont, CO and Mary (Rich) McCool of Kelso, WA. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents Almond and Diana Collette, husband Elmer Altendorf, son Martin Altendorf, great grandson Eric Altendorf, great-great grandson Caleb Powers, and brothers: Merlyn Collette, Leroy Collette, Ronald Collette, Alan Collette, and Phillip Collette.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, March 5, 2026 at 11:00 A.M. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Minto, North Dakota. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church with a Rosary service at 9:30 A.M. Interment will be at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Oakwood, North Dakota. The funeral will be livestreamed on the Tollefson Funeral Home Website. Memorials are preferred to the Saint Gianna & Pietro Molla Maternity Home or the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Building Fund.
